Triskelion Tuesday Surf & Culture Report

Lost Boys & Co... I t wasn't easy, but we found our way back from Laughlin.  One long weekend of dissipation, gambling and all manner of excesses.  We even had a chicken fried steak one morning!  The thing is, once they've got you there, it's not easy to leave.  If the previously listed temptations weren't enough, you're surrounded by desert filled with nasty serpents like the one illustrated in photo #1.  C lear skies this morning with about 18 miles visibility.  Winds were offshore by 3.8kts and the sea surface was smooth to almost glassy.  The air temperature at checkout was a cool 51.5° and the water was south of refreshing at 57.9°.  Low tide was late at 11:02am +1.3' and high tide was even later at 5:57pm +2.6'.  Waiting for the next swell we currently have a short bump out of the west 261° at 2.3'.  It's translating to 1' to 2' and just a bit weak.  Things are supposed to get better almost immediately...  We're waiting... Lost Boys & Co... W hen you've seen thousands of boards, what makes one that really stands out?  Jimmy Barahona, said he couldn't explain it, but this was it.  The flash made it look bluer than it appeared in person, an almost black blue.  It looked like a stealth bomber, with perfect rails, no bumps, wings or widgets.  Ché, just smiled... A warm Southern California winter's day.  A little smoggy, but eminently breathable and 20 miles visibility with nary a cloud in sight.  Winds were variable, having a hard time deciding from which direction they preferred to blow.  Mostly 2.3kts out of the WSW and the sea surface was smooth.  The air temp was 55.6° and the water was 57.7°.  High tide is at 10:36am +4.9' and low tide will follow at 5:12pm +0.1'.  We have a west swell out of 265° at 3.6' and it was an inconsistent 3' to 4' at most places.  Supposed to get bigger and better mañana...  Check it out amigo... Lost Boys & Co... Y ou get up in the morning, put on your red trunks, slide into your slaps, find your whitest T-shirt, grab your coffee cup, maybe get the visor, but for sure your shades and head down to work.  Photo #1 is where you work.  This is the view.  If you are Don Souther you did this for like, 35 years.  Not bad, for a day job... A nother day of some thin high clouds, but mostly sunny and 10 degrees warmer than yesterday.  22 miles visibility and looking like what most people imagine Southern California to look like.  Winds were lightly offshore by 2.2kts and the sea surface was smooth.  The air temperature was 50.5° and the water was 57.6°.  High tide was at 9:58am +5.5' and low tide will be at 4:42pm -0.4'.  The buoy tells us that we continue to have a west swell out of  262° at 4.3'.  It was floating a bit much for Sapphire but lots of other places had waves in the 4' to 5' range including Burnout, Torrance, HB & MB.  Should continue through t

Lost Boys & Co... S o, after we got some waves this morning we were caroming along the Esplanade and decided to check out things around Ave. I.  There was this guy just sitting there by himself taking a look.  We said "hi" and then when we actually looked at him, thought "Hey, is this Kalani Robb?  And if it is, what is he doing HERE?"  Finally, we just decided to ask and lo and behold it was him.  We asked him why he was in the So. Bay and it turns out he was doing a photo shoot.  Cool that he got some good waves and no doubt he made'm look better.  Since he had already grabbed some lens time we thought we'd ask him if we could take his pic so you wouldn't think we were just spinning a yarn.  He was so cool, he suggested we get someone to take both of us.  So, much aloha to Kalani and to the cool old gent who obliged us! H igh clouds with 20 miles visibility and rain all gone.  Winds were chilly offshore by 2.7kts and the sea surface was smooth wit

Lost Boys & Co... S aturday was a rainy, not very good day for surf.  Kinda wild and woolly and the tides and wind broke it all up.  But Sunday!  Everything came together and it was one of the best mornings in recent memory.  The surf was overhead at most locations and the wind stayed off all morning.  Later in the am we headed down to Burnout and watched some shortboarders get some great tubes.  So we got out our camera and took a couple of shots.  There are a couple of things that made us wonder about photo #1.  First, how did the kid in the foreground get stuck in the sand like that?  Did he ever get out?  The sign said he shouldn't have entered - so he's in trouble.  Then there's the guy on this rather ledgy left, getting ready to get covered up.  Maybe the sign is warning him not to enter?  Well, he entered and then didn't come out the other end.  We considered him warned.  Lesson:  Surfers can not read "Do Not Enter" signs. N ot so good today as yes

Lost Boys & Co... H ere's the Steve and Kirra show.  We caught them at Barnacles in Hermosa on Wednesday when they showed up for a casual.  Always fun to hear some live tunes and sit close to the action... P artly cloudy with 20 miles visibility this morning.  Winds were offshore by 4.56kts and the sea surface started out a bit heckled, but settled down to some gray-green glass.  The air temp was 49.9° and the water was 58.3°.  High tide was at 6:29am +6.4' and low tide will follow at 1:45pm -1.2'.  The buoy was reading a west swell out of 262° at 3.6'.  It was a skoshi bigger at Hermosa and we'll call it 3' and good shape.  Kinda looked like Sapphire North with Sandy, Ben, Hudson, José and the Professor, joining Rasta Pete and Donnie Souther for some fun waves... T he Hawaiian god of ukulele music...  maybe...  ✠ "When the surf breaks, we'll fix it..."  The Professor!!

Lost Boys & Co... R eplete with hoodie and earphones, Rasta Pete was rockin' the counter at Brother's until it got warm enough to go out!  We saw him get a nice little cover-up and then proceed to air dry all the way to the beach.  Very nice! H azy winter sun this morning with 18 miles visibility.  Winds were offshore by 4.3kts and the sea surface was smooth.  The air temp was 44.3° and the water is 58.3° and holding.  That will probably be true until the predicted rain hits on Saturday.  High tide at 5:37am +6.1' and low tide will follow at 1:01pm -0.8'.  We have a west swell out of 265° at 3.0' and the south side of Hermosa Pier was a fun 2' to 3'.  A fun crew and everyone got some nice little peelers!  Forecast says tomorrow will be a tad bigger - let's hold'em to that... W hat are the chances that you invite your Wendy's to brekky and they both wear orange jackets?  Here we have Danger Girl and LoLa scattering the gulls and wearing a bit

C old this morning as the thermometer hit 39° in some parts of the So. Bay.  43.0° at the beach and 58.5° in the water.  20 miles visibility and clear skies with rain predicted for the weekend.  Winds off by 3.7kts and the sea surface was glassy.  High tide was at 4:39am +5.7' and low tide was at 12:11pm -0.3'.  WSW swell out of 245° at 2.3' and it looked about 2' to to us and almost rideable... Lost Boys & Co... Y ou know how you get up in the morning and think, "Okay, I'm going to check out the surf with Danger Boy.  We'll get a few waves, then maybe some brekky at Brother's, just kinda hang out in the morning."  Then, the next thing you know you're getting a tour of the lifeguard headquarters in Hermosa from non-other than Donnie Souther himself.  Did you know that Donnie was in the Huntington Surf Contest (At that time it was the Nationals) like, four times and was in the semis a couple of times and in the finals once!  Yeah, he was kinda good.  He was also Captain of the LA Co. Lifeguards for a number of years before he retired.  Danger Boy was especially impressed with the emergency facilities... A chilly morning here in lotus land, with 20 miles visibility under a distant hazy sun.  Winds were offshore at checkout by 5.4kts and the sea surface was smooth to glassy.  The air temperature was 40.8 chilly f'n degrees and the water was com

Martin Luther King Monday Surf & Culture Report

Lost Boys & Co... A bit of a stormy beginning for a Martin Luther King Monday here in So Cal.  That beaten silver against the dark clouds is always dramatic.  Kinda like Raiders colors... C loudy and overcast this morning with a few sprinkles, but still around 20 miles visibility.  Winds were onshore by 7.2kts and the sea surface was significantly choppy.  The air temperature was 52.2° and the water was 58.8°.  Low tide was at 9:47am +1.1' and high tide will be at 3:32pm +3.9'.  The swell is from the WSW 251° at 3.0'.  It's about 2' at most local spots, but should be increasing in size as the front passes. P hoto #2 demonstrates how casual life can be at the nose.  Trevor LaShure gets a high five as he scoots past Devin Nathan at Hermosa Pier.  This move is also good for handing the rider a doughnut, bringing in the catch of the day or swinging 'round the May pole.  F inally, we have the crew at Brother's discussing the news of the day.  Chino is manni

Lost Boys & Co... T hings are a little different in California.  For example photo #1 shows what it looks like when you're late for class.  Everyone else is sitting on their boards ready for action and you still have to paddle out.  (Actually, if you're late you get a tardy and Coach Avery docks you 20 points!)  Photo #2 shows what it's like to get an "A".  This is Jen Doyle finding one of the better lefts that came through this morning... 25 miles visibility this morning under orange juice skies and nary a cloud in sight.  Winds were off by 5.4kts and the sea surface was smooth to glassy.  The air temp was a chilly 50.0° and the water continues to be an unseasonably warm59.0°.  Once again today it went up to 61° in the pm.  Low tide kicks off the morning at 5:30am and high tide follows at 11:17am +4.8'.  The buoy shows a SW swell out of 234° at 2.0'.  Danger Boy and the Professor caught the Hermosa Pier at 2' to 3' and got some fun little sc

Lost Boys & Co... O kay, this is what happens when you ask for extra salsa at Brother's.  Sometimes Oscar just gets the rips and starts doing a little shuffle buck 'n wing extreme-corrida.  At it's best, it gets the whole place dancing...  At it's worst... you don't want to know... A bit of the smoggles out there this morning, but still about 20 miles visibility under that hazy winter sun.  Winds were offshore at checkout by 5.2kts and the sea surface was smooth to glassy.  The air temp was 52.3° and the water has crept up to an unseasonably warm 59.0° and later in the day at 3:15pm it got to 60.4°.  Once again this makes us worry that we're going to pay for this warming trend about August when the water is 62 instead of 72...  High tide was at 10:29am +5.4' and low tide will follow at 5:20pm -0.3'.  The buoy was reading a SW swell out of 233° at 3.3'.  The North side of the Hermosa Pier had some nice shoulders and we joined Rasta Pete in split

Lost Boys & Co... O ne of the things that keeps you coming back to Brother's Burritos are the guys behind the counter.  Ivan Fernandes always has a smile on his face and a witty quip to get you started on your way.  To top it off, he's a great musician and will keep up with you on any rpm trivia.  But don't even bother with anything about Ozzy - you'll be shut down before you start... H azy skies this morning and 15 miles visibility.  Winds were offshore by 3.5kts and the sea surface was smooth, but not quite glassed.  The air temperature was a cool 49.1° and the water was a toe tickling 59.0°.  High tide at 9:47am +5.9' and low tide is at 4:46pm -0.7'.  The buoy is reading a WSW swell out of 252° at 3.6' and it's hitting us with 3' to 5' faces, with an occasional shapely shoulder...  Go gett'em...  T he Redondo Surf Team really took it to the competition this morning.  Coach Duncan Avery sent this to us... Lost Boys & Co... W e have an archival photo of the Professor splashin' along at Roca Sunzal in El Salvador...  Kinda reminded us of the Cove this morning, but with about 20 more degrees of water temp... A beautiful morning as the sun came up in a dither over Hermosa Beach.  We were up early to watch the So. Bay Surf League Preliminaries.  About 22 miles visibility and some high haziness.  Winds were offshore by 5.2kts and the sea surface was smooth, but not quite glassy.  The air temperature was a chilly 47.7° and the water continues to hold at 58.5°.  High tide was at 9:08am +6.2' and low tide was at 4:13pm -0.9'.  We have a WSW swell out of 251° on the board as 3.3'.  We'll call it 3' to 4' and maybe some thicker ones on the outside. I f you'd rather watch some surfing in the morning instead of going to that boring day job, drop by Hermosa Pier and watch the second half of the So. Bay Surf League Prelims.   There'll be Boys Long Boarding, Bo

Lost Boys & Co... O n the lookout for surf wherever we travel, we spotted these "waves" on Lake Payette near the west shore of McCall, Idaho.  They've had freezing cold weather, but not much snow, so the ice is buckling and doing all kinds of strange things that usually happen under a blanket of snow.  These waves were about 2 to 3 feet high and were a little walled, but you could make them since they weren't really moving very fast... S o a beautiful So. Cal morning with 20 miles visibility under a hazy smoggy sun.  Winds were offshore at checkout by 3.1kts and the sea surface was smooth to glassy.  The air temperature was 50.6° and the water was 58.5° and it's supposed to cool off as the week unfolds.  High tide at 8:22am +6.3' and low tide will be at 3:41pm -0.1'.  The buoy is reading a west swell out of 262° at 2.6' and we think it looks about 1' to 2' and high tide fat.  We went for a paddle... Cal with some surf if you know where to look!  17 miles visibility and the air at checkout was 56.3°.  The sea temp. remains at 58.6°, but seems a bit chillier.  Winds were offshore by 3.4kts and the sea surface was smooth.  High tide at 6:24am 5.3' and low tide will follow at 1:51pm -0.1'.  Setting up for another week of pm lows in which to do a bit of beach combing.  We have a west swell from 264° at 3.3', but we have Barahona Special Report that says that 26th St. is head high, but so soft, that there's no problem on the paddle out!  The Cove is worth taking a look.  It's been happening for the last couple of weeks, albeit at odd times.  Also, a Sandy-gram tells us that the tide could influence the entire playing field.  As always, take a look! Lost Boys & Co... O kay, we were trying to decide what to get Lilly on her birthday and we walked into the sporting goods store and there it was!  Yes, a ROCKET SLED!  Can you imagine when she gets that thing on the slopes?  They had the world's land speed record for years!  Like three-hundred and something mph!  She'll be stoked!  Maybe she'll let us borrow it...? L ooked like the morning started out with sunny skies and a high tide at 5:47am +5.1'.  Low tide will be at 1:18pm +0.3'.  The water temperature was 58.6° and the air at checkout was 54.2°.  Winds were offshore by 2.5kts and the sea surface was smooth.  Reading a west swell at 264° and 5.2' at the buoy, the surf was chest to head-high and just a tad bumped from the tide.  Should get better tomorrow! M eanwhile, Lilly started out the morning of her first birthday, with a trip to the gym... ✠   "When the surf breaks, we'll fix it..."  The Professor!!
