No Fireworks Friday Surf & culture Report

Lost Boys & Co... C an you. imagine what these citizens thought when they saw all eight of us walking down the path to the beach (#1)?  There goes the neighborhood!  Hey!  We were nice! O vercast. and 9 miles visibility.  Winds were light on shore not causing much of a ripple.  Air was 61.5° and the water was 61.9°.  High tide was at 8:38am. +3.3' and low tide followed at 12:58pm +2.3'.  It. was a west swell out of 261° at 2.3'. and it was 2' to 3' and passably fun...   Plan is to do the same mañana... ✠ "When the surf breaks, we'll fix it" The Professor!!

Lost Boys & Co... A mere 60 years between them, Millie and the Professor (#1) head out for a surf.   When you think about it there aren't too many sports where folks of such divergent ages still get to enjoy and hang out with each other.  They had a marvelous time and the surf got better as the tide dropped... L ight overcast this morning with 10miles visibility.   Winds were offshore by 2 to 5kts and the sea surface was smooth.  The air temp was 61.3° and the water is 61.7°.  High tide was at 7:41am +3.1' and low tide wasn't that. low at 12:01pm +2.2'.  We have a SSW swell out of 210° at 3.0' and it might have been. 3' but the tide was so high it really wasn't breaking.  Trying Sapphire early (7am) mañana... ✠ "When the surf breaks, we'll fix it" The Professor!!

Lost Boys & Co... O ne of our up and coming surf stars, Millie Hortsman (photo #1).  We got a chance to surf with her this morning and she was ripping it up!  A goofyfoot, she goes right effortlessly and walks the nose like a pro.  Besides thjat she's a joy to surf with and always  has a great attitude!  Go girl! A n unusual morning with winds starting out of the southwest and then switching offshore at 1 to 3kts, for the better part of  an hour.  Cloudy with 7 miles visibility and it felt chilly in the air at 60.5 and 61.9° in the water.  High tide was at 6:26am +3.0' and low tide was at  11:15am +1.9'.   It's a SSW swell out  of 199° at 3.6' and it was 3'  to 4' with some fatter outsides washing everyone out of  the zone.  Annaland was on and the Office had a few peaks on the odd sets... S upposed to be sunny and offshore in the morning... we'll see about that... ✠ "When the surf breaks, we'll fix it" The Professor!!

Treble Clef 🎼 Tuesday Surf & Culture Report

Lost Boys & Co... H azy sun this morning clearing into an almost summer day.  Winds were out of the SSW by 1 to 5kts and the sea surface went from smooth to pretty riled up.  The air temperature was 60.5º and the water is 61.5º.  Low tide was late at 10:31am +1.6' and high tide was at 5:35pm +4.9'.  We have a west swell out of 262º at 3.6' and it was an inconsistent 3' to 4' breaking on some of the outer sand bars, but floating through the middle.  Hoping for a little more consistency mañana... W hat are these men laughing about?  Probably about the fact that it's almost July and the water is still below 65º, we've had two sunny days since summer officially started and most folks are still in full wetsuits.  Actually, it's not that funny, but they make it sound funny... ✠ "When the surf breaks, we'll fix it" The Professor!!

A Memorable Monday Surf & Culture Report

Lost Boys & Co... A n absolutely fabulous paddle out for Kevin Sousa yesterday.  Great music, heartfelt remembrances, and a paddleout that probably had two to three hundred people, while the Lifeguards said there were about 2,000 folks on the beach! Check out the attached video for a glimpse of the Baywatch cooling down the assembled paddlers! A beautiful morning as winds continued to diminish and the sea surface ended up being pretty smooth.  Visibility was +20 miles and skies were clear.  The air was a chilly 58.3º (which didn't seem to faze Burnsy, who, because of a failed wetsuit zipper, barebacked it!) and the water was 61.5º.  We keep seeing Valella Valella (common name: By-the-wind Sailors) and that is supposed to mean the water will be getting warmer.  We're waiting...  Low tide was at 9:48am +1.3' and high tide fills up at 5:03pm +4.5'.  We have a 3.6' swell out of the west (262º) and it was 3' to 4' and some fun surf for the assembled crew! ✠ &

Works Even Better Than Advertised Friday Surf & Culture Report

Lost Boys & Co... F irst, let's say how great it is to be joined the last couple of mornings by none other than José Barahona.  Maybe he wanted to see how well his creations were doing in the water.  He had to be impressed with Jah Morgan's turns and that ten she got across the typically unmakeable section at Outside Scotty's.  S econdly, speaking of Morgan, she was NOT putting a curse on Oscar as some suggested, in yesterday's photo.  That was an involuntary muscle response due to being overly excited by her new surfboard. A nd THIRDLY, speaking of Morgan (and Christian), how remote is the possibility that you'd find a section of the Hermosa pier (photo #1) with their initials on it and then cut it off the pier and display it accordingly.  Yeah, pretty remote... T he clouds parted this morning and let some welcomed sunshine on the proceedings.  Winds were offshore by 1kt and the sea surface was smooth.  The air was 58.0º and the water is stuck at 63.0º.  Low ti

It's lighter, it's got a sexy nose and you could lose it in the sky were you to kick out...  We'll let you know how it works, but we're guessing amazing... C loudy and windy this morning with 4 to 8kt winds out of the SW.  Sea surface was choppy.  The air temp was 57.3º and the water is 63.9º.  Even thought he sun came out it never really seemed to get warm.  Low tide was at 7:11am -0.1' and high tide follows at 2:22pm +3.6'.  We have a west swell out of 265º at 4.3' and it would have been great if it weren't for the wind.  As it was it was 3' to 5' and bumped out of round... ✠ "When the surf breaks, we'll fix it" The Professor!!

Scene Of The Crime Wednesday Surf & Culture Report

Image
Lost Boys & Co... H onestly, we have been known to stay in some pretty sketchy establishments.  This one in Telluride seemed to be pretty respectable, but one morning when we walked down the hall we came upon this scene (photo #1).  Tell-tale footprints in the fine dust of extinguisher powder and the used canister on the floor under the broken fire extinguisher cabinet...  A diversion to hide a bigger crime?  Breakfast gone wrong?  Midnight prank? H azy sun this morning, but there it was as plain as day, the real article.  10miles visibility and light onshore winds from 1 to 3kts.  The sea surface was smooth.  The air temperature was 57.5º rapidly soaring to almost 70º.  The water is not great at 63.7º  Low tide was at 6:32am -0.3' and high tide was at 1:33pm +3.5'.  It was a strong SSW swell out of 202º at 3.6' bringing some fun 3' to 4' waves with some nice outsides.  Sitting pretty far out for Hermosa! ✠ "When the surf breaks, we'll fix it" The

Second Longest Tuesday of the Year Surf & Culture Report

Lost Boys & Co... I f there's a special event, if there's a party, if there's a paddle out, who you gonna call?  Well, you're going to call the Sruf Familia and they will show up and bring a salad, a casserole and a Pabst and a bottle of wine.  Photo #1 was the Pride Day paddle out and and if you were Kirra, things went swimmingly and the rest of the crew paddled... FINALLY!   There are waves!  It started yesterday and the group hit Sapphire to make the most of the wind sheltered SSW swell out of 200º.  Winds were light out of the west by 1 to 3kts and the sea surface was smooth.  The air was 62.0º and the water is 62.6º  Low tide was at 5:54am -0.6' and high tide was at 12:49pm +3.5'.  You had to catch it early to take advantage of the 3.3' swell and it was 2' to 3' until the tide floated it beyond rideable...  Maybe mañana?  Check'em out!

Lost Boys & Co... P hoto #1.  Here we have a young gladiator getting one of the longest waves of the day, after being pushed in by his friend/instructor/cousin (?).  Initially, we were concerned because it was shorebreak conditions and well suited for breaking a neck or displacing various vertebrae.  But he and his friends were having such a great time!  They were hooping and hollering and enjoying the 5 second rides into the sand.  And just like that, their joy was contagious and we were laughing and cheering them on and realized they were having the most fun of anyone from the Breakwall to the Manhattan Pier.  Obviously, we still have a lot to learn... C loudy and a chilly 61.0º in the air and 63.5º in the water.  Winds were calm until about 9:15 and then the onshore flow started up.  High tide was at 9:55am +3.6' and low tide follows at 2:16pm +2.2'.  The problem with low tide Hermosa has been the sand bars are out 50yds and inside of that are holes that are now 6' d

Burns.  She has taken some considerable liberties, but it remains that these are three of the best lefts we've ever seen pour through Annaland... C loudy skies continue to prevail and we had 10 miles visibility.  Winds were light offshore changing early to 2 to 4kts on.  The sea surface was smooth.  The air temp was 61.3º and the water is 62.2º.  High tide was at 9:02am +3.6' and low tide follows at 1:38pm +2.0'.  A 2.0' SSW swell out of 198º is still bypassing our fair shores and it was flat to flatter... ✠ "When the surf breaks, we'll fix it" The Professor!!

It's Not Tetanus Tuesday Surf & Culture Report

Image
Lost Boys & Co... T here wasn't a report yesterday because there was no surf.  None.  But that doesn't mean nothing was happening.  Of course not.  One of the members of our Familia opened his front door and there was the neighbor's cat.  He bent down to acknowledge the beast and the blighter bit him down to the bone!  Surprised, anguished and full of feline microbes our colleague headed directly to his physician who loaded him full of antibiotics and warnings about touching feral kitties.  But in no time at all his hand started to swell and is now hot to the touch.  A sure sign of infection!  Let this be a lesson to you animal lovers!  Oh yeah, who was the unlucky gent?  None other than Doc Scale doing his best Danger Boy impersonation. A cloudy morning giving way to sun.  Winds out of the SW by 7 to 9kts.  The sea surface was textured.  The air temperature was 60.0º and the water is 62.2º.  High tide is at 6:54am +3.6' and low tide will be at 122:16pm +1.3'.

An Hypnagogic Friday Surf & Culture Report

Image
Lost Boys & Co... Y es, it's Friday and the weekend is upon us in rather cloudy fashion.  To the point where the weather-dude is saying we might get a few sprinkles over the next two days.  That should moisten up your weekend!  So there's 5 miles visibility and the winds are on-shore 3 to 5kts.  The sea surface is sporting a bit of texture, as you can see in Exhibit A.  What you can't see so well is that the air temp is 59.9º and the water is 62.6º.  Low tide is this morning at 8:53am -0.5' and high tide crests at 4:00pm +4.2'.  We're missing a good shot at the SSW swell out of 198º and it's only 2' (again, you can refer to Exhibit A) and unless someone is pushing you into these mushburgers, (one more time Exhibit A) or you have a SUP, like Laurie did this morning, you're not going to be too happy... W e''d like to send out our congratulations to our Redondo Union High School graduating seniors.  Today is Graduation Day and I'm sure t
