An Energetic Thursday Surf & Culture Report

Lost Boys & Co... W e headed out to the Valley (San Fernando, that is) to celebrate Yom Kippur with Jetski and his fam.  In photo #1 we have the Professor schmoozing with Mama Vishnevsky, absolutely one of the best cooks we've ever met.  It was an honor to find ourselves sitting at her table.  She worked for three days to prepare this meal and we ate non-stop from 6:23pm to midnight! 5 miles visibility this morning under a hazy sun.  Winds were light offshore by 2.7kts and the sea surface was smooth.  The air temp was 58.8 and the water is 66.9.  High tide was at 8:01am +5.4' and low tide followed at 2:00pm +1.0'.  We had a building SSW swell out of 202º at 2.6' and it was 2' to 4'.  By tomorrow that's supposed to jump a foot! #2 has the Professor chatting it up with Mama's consort, the fabulous Dr. Henry.  His home is a marvelous tribute to his travels and varied interests.  For many years he sported a goatee and because the resemblance was uncanny

Lost Boys & Co... W e mentioned the RU Car show yesterday, but didn't show any of the participants!   In order to remedy that, we have the Professor's ride "Scooter Boy" runner-up in the Best Original category.  In photo #2 we have a 500 horse power Corvette, Mark's bug-eyed Sprite and Dennis Lefevres sea foam green Bug.  Not to be disrespectful, but since the owner volunteered the information, we'll just pass it on.  It seems that his dad bought this Corvette when it was about 5 years old.  Dad and son tricked the car out and when dad passed away a few years ago, they had him cremated.  Now you car guys will know that these Sting Rays have tubular frames.  You guessed it.  His son drilled a hole in the frame, took some of the ashes, poured them in and corked up the hole.  It's one way to have your co-pilot with you at all times... W eather felt a tad close this morning, with 5 miles visibility under overcast skies.  Winds were onshore by 5.9kts and th

Lost Boys & Co... S aturday was the Third Annual RUHS Car Show.  A rather festive event to raise money for the RUHS PTA, it had a bit of everything automotive.  The oldest vehicle was this 1921 Model T owned by Rick Miller.  Everyone held it in pretty high regard except for the pug that was busy marking his right front tire as his territory... F ifteen miles visibility this morning under partly cloudy, hazy skies.  Winds were light out of the north by 3.6kts and the sea surface was smooth.  The air temperature was 58.9 and the water is 68.5.  High tide was at 6:43am +4.1' and low tide was at 11:46am +2.8'.  The tides will be swinging more widely as the week rolls on.  We have a weak SSW swell out of 199º at 2.0'.  It was all ankle snappers and possibly mackerel snappers as well... P hoto #2 has the Professor and Marko Maileman showing off some of their swag.  The Professor was runner up in the Best Original category and Marko was the Student Favorite! #3 Has Bobby Warc

Lost Boys & Co... S o you probably got a photo for your "Informal Thursday" with not much else...  This should fix all that... O ur first photo today is from a recent shoot by Paul Roustand an internationally regarded body-art artist.  Paul is originally from Chicago, but upon moving to the South Bay fell in with some of our history and cultural iconography.  Riffing on Pink Floyd's famous poster, he substituted So. Bay themes instead.  From l. to r. there's the Tim Kelly statue, skating and skateboarding, punk rock scene, the Hermosa sun/volleyball logo, the Redondo Pier and the power plant.  Among the models were our own, Morgan Sliff, Suzi Paine and Amber Jones... H azy sun this morning with 10 miles visibility.  Winds were light offshore by 3.6kts and the sea surface was smooth.  The air temp started out cool at 62.4 and the water is 68.5.  Low tide was at 5:50am +2.7' and high tide will follow at 12:18pm +4.8'.  We have a waning west swell out of 255º

Lost Boys & Co... N ever realized how much control it takes to paint out of control...  These treads are meant to be worn as matching black and white pairs or white and black pairs.  Suddenly your wardrobe has three new options... S ome great surf today at most spots!  Hazy morning sun and 10 miles visibility.  Offshore winds at 2.3kts and smooth surface conditions.  The air temperature was a chilly 57.3, but the water is holding steady at 68.5 at the buoy and maybe a tad warmer in the surfline.  High tide at 11:14am +5.2' and low tide at 6:06pm +0.9'.  We have a west swell out of 262º at 5.2' and it was a consistent 4' to 5' with some outsides up to overhead.  Fast and shallow on the inside, but some epic takeoffs and full-speed runs... S ometimes, when you run out of shirts and shoes you get a bit more traditional...  Titled "Out Of Orbit" it's more like "Out Of Our Price Range."... ✠ "When the surf breaks, we'll fix it..."

Lost Boys & Co... N othing like a new blade to make your day/week/month/year!  Here we have Suzanne with the new Suzi Rocket, shaped by none other than Ché and painted by her and Joey.  The top is great, but the bottom really stands out.  Like always, the photo really doesn't do it justice... E arly morning session at El Porto this morning, lead by Jah Morgalini and her troupe of touring surf acrobats.  A little hazy, but otherwise cloudless skies.  Winds were light offshore and the sea surface was smooth to almost glassy.  The air temperature was 55.5 and the water is toasty at 68.7.  Some warm spots had to be damned near 70!  High tide was at 10:48 +5.4' and the tide will be low at 5:26pm +0.7'.  We currently have a west swell out of 260º at 3.6' and it was amplifying to 4' to 5' with some ear-tickling sets.  Let's hope this keeps up for the week! ✠ "When the surf breaks, we'll fix it..."  The Professor!!
