Lost Boys & Co... S ome yummy sashimi, ready on the plate at Asahi, Eagle Idaho.  Used to be that you'd have to be right on the water to get fresh fish.  These days, Idaho is a couple of hours from the beach...  Oh yeah, it was pretty damned good... M ore gray today, with about 5 miles visibility.  Winds are out of the SSW by 3.9kts, leaving a bit of tack on the surface.  The air temperature is 61.9° and the water is 64.2°.  Low tide is pulled back at 6:06am -0.4' and the high tide push is at 12:44pm +3.9'.  The buoy is reading a SSW swell out of 200° at 2.6'.  The waves are small and walled at 1' to 2'. P ortugal meets Spain in the World Cup today.  Since the US is out we're throwing our support behind the red and green.  We're heading out to Artesia, to watch at the Portuguese Hall.  With any luck we'll have some photos to share in the morning.  Let's hope the outcome favors the homeland! Lost Boys & Co... C elebrations abounded yesterday as the Portagees celebrated their annual festa de Hynes D.E.S..  Closer to home, the McGarry's celebrated Michael's graduation from Emerson University.  In a rare display of collar popping virtuosity we have, Paver, Steve Masmanian, Jim McGarry, The Professor, Metaphecius, Mikey, Johnnie Brodhead and Muscles Proaño.  Having been past-posted on the collar gambit, the Professor showed up in three and aced the competition. G ray, windy morning with 7 miles visibility under heavily overcast skies.  Even a bit of drizzle in the odd corner.  Winds were onshore from the start at 7.8kts, leaving the surface heavily tacked.  The air temperature is 62.3° and the water is 64.0°.  Low tide is at 5:34am -0.6' and high tide will be at 12:10pm +3.9'.  The buoy is reading a SSW swell out of 197° at 3.3' - but a lot of that is passing us by so we're calling it 1' to almost 3' and poor to sloppy shape. Lost Boys & Co... Y ou know how you're just buzzin' along and you see a sign and you really don't read the fine print and you just go into the office at the school and you just straight away ask what kinds of free drugs, alcohol, tobacco and weapons they have.  Because deep down you're thinking, "This is too good to be true," but on the other hand you're also thinking that it would be cool to have a shot of tequila, while smoking a Cuban and blasting away on some targets with blazing Colts.  You'd just get a couple of aspirins for later - you know - all the noise and whatever.  So we weren't that surprised when the school secretary explained it to us...  Okay, just a little disappointed... S urf came up this morning despite the high-ish tide.  10 miles visibility under partly cloudy skies, with some nice patches of sun on the water.  Winds were light on all morning around 2 to 5kts with a light tack on the water.  The air temp was 60.1° and t

Lost Boys & Co... I t's pretty flat in this part of Idaho, so people take any advantage they can get in reaching altitude.  You might recall the first iteration of this instrument of mirth and reverse peristalsis, known to most baby-boomers as the "hammer."  Two bullet shaped vehicles that swung in opposition to each other, swinging higher and higher until they did twin loops.  You had to rely on centrifugal force to keep any emissions glued to the floor/ceiling until it stopped it's wild pendulum swing.  Our recollection is that Dale Rush threw up a candy apple that could have been reassembled in less than 5 parts...    G ray morning, giving way to partly cloudy skies mid-day.  12 miles visibility and plenty of marine haze.  Winds were calm to light onshore early at 1.9kts and the sea surface was lightly chopped.  The air temp was 60.3° at checkout and the water was 64.2°.  High tide was at 9:49am +3.7' and low tide followed at 2:06pm +2.3'.  The 46221 b

Lost Boys & Co... Y ep, you gotta like the way they do some things in Idaho.  Like the way they put the kids in these big bubbles and let them play in the water without getting wet.  No muss, no fuss and no water born bacteria to cause those fistulous withers we were talking about.  After a while the kids just run out of air and kinda collapse on their own.  Sort of automatic shrink wrapping.  In a way it's funny - here we've been telling them not to put plastic over their heads and now we're escorting them into an entire bubble! D on't forget July 4th at the Professor's!  5pm until the Tiki torches light and the fireworks begin at the beach!  Lots of Linguiça, drink and good company!  Your chance to be Portuguese for a few hours...  Be there or be northern European! S o all of that swell swell activity we've been having has been dying down.  The morning started out overcast and gray, with 10miles visibility.  Winds were pretty much onshore from the get-go

Cherry Festival Tuesday Surf & Culture Report

Image
Lost Boys & Co... L ast Saturday found us at the annual Cherry Festival in Emmet, Idaho .  We were a bit surprised (heaven knows why?) to be reminded of the San Joaquin Valley.  Take for instance the totemic water tower in the middle of town.  All it needed was "Pixley" on it.  A local fellow, who had already had his fair share of cherry cordial, caught the Professor taking this photo and asked him if he knew how long the water tower had been there.  The Professor studied the tower for a moment and said in his best Tulare drawl, "Reckon it's been there as long as people been thirsty."  The guy slapped his knee (literally) and said, "That's a damned good answer!"  Yeah, he didn't know either... B ack here in civilization, it's overcast with 7 miles visibility.  Winds are already lightly onshore by 2.7kts and the sea surface is lightly tacked.  The air temperature is 60.5° and the water is 63.1°.  High tide is at 8:00am straight up +3.4

O vercast this morning, trying desperately to clear.  10 miles visibility, with a bit of the marine haze.  Winds turned onshore early blowing 3.7kts about 9am and freshening to a full 12kts by noon.  The sea surface is tacked to light white caps.  The air temp was 60.1° at checkout and the water is 65.8° and finally feels like it.  Low tide at 8:50am +0.3' and high tide will follow at 3:"49pm +4.9'.  The buoy is reading a 3.9' swell out of 256° WSW and we're calling it 3' with fair shape... N ext report on Tuesday.  We'll be headed for a long weekend to Boise.  We hear that the Cherry Festival in Emmit is not to be missed.  They tell us that, even though we understand that the cherry crop is late this year and there might not be enough cherries for everyone to get one... Thinner Thursday Surf & Culture Report & July 4th Invitation

Image
Lost Boys & Co... E ven though we suggested that we would include a July 4th Invitation yesterday, we didn't manage to fit it in.  So here's the scoop: 4 th of July Linguiça Feed & Gathering of the Tribes 5:00pm Sunday July 4th (until the sun goes down) At the Professor's 516 Paseo de las Estrellas - Redondo Beach 90277 310-373-5138 (If you feel the overwhelming desire to bring something how about an appetizer?  Margot:  Chocolate Lush!) A gorgeous morning greeted the surfistas as they made their way to the water.  15 miles visibility and clear sunny skies, after a brief skirmish with some low clouds at daybreak.  Winds were offshore by 5.1kts and the sea surface was smooth to glassy, before the onshores kicked up around 9:30am.  The air temp was 62.1° and the water was 64.9° staying above 65 for the rest of the day.  Low tide was at 8:01am -0.3' and high tide will follow at 2:56pm +4.5'.  The buoy was reading a W swell out of 259° true at 3.0' and we

J ust like we promised yesterday!  Here's an entire spring roll from Lou-e-Luey's on the left and on the right is it's partially eaten twin.  It's two for $3 on Monday nights.  Also included is some tasty peanut sauce and we like to add a bit of Sirachi to spice things up.  Antony saw us wolfing down all this good grub and he asked if we'd ever been to Vietnam.  We said, "No, but the U.S. Army had an intense interest in sending us there back in the 60's and early 70's.  We just never took advantage of their generous offer, which included food, lodging, travel expenses and training..."  Mean while who should appear but Maleko, Baleko, Dialeko and Paveleko.  They were having a jolly time of it and took a moment to pose for this snap.  Remember:  "The family that eats together, lekos together." I t's good to be King or at least the Coordinator of the South Bay Dozen.  Yep, that's Mexico Mike Murphy under the administration tent getting lathered up with sun block by his attendant/apprentice/ward.  By all accounts they had a really successful event and next year it promises to be so prestigious that he'll have a girl attendant doing the sunscreen honors.  Our second photo features Ross "Roscoe" McKinnon and Allen Walti, both renowned lifeguards and watermen.  It was fun just hanging with them and listening to all the stories of past competitions. A bit of a surprise swell showed up this morning as the sky cleared and we had 15 miles visibility.  To add to the surprise the winds stopped and then turned full offshore by 9.7kts, leaving a light tack on the surface and brushing the waves, just so...  The air temperature was 60.7°, but has been warming quickly and the water is 64.4°.  Low tide is at 6:28am -1.1' and high tide will b

S o, after a weekend of overcast, it's overcast again this morning with 7 miles visibility.  Winds were calm at the go out and the sea surface was glassy.  The air temperature was 61.3° and the water was 64.4°.  Low tide started things out this morning at 5:43am -1.4' and high tide will be at 12:24pm +3.9'.  The ever popular 46221 buoy is reading a SSW swell out of 201° true at 2.6' and we're calling it 2' to 3' with poor to fair conditions.  Long intervals, with small sets. Funny How Falling Feels Like Flying - For A Little While - Friday Surf & Culture Report

Lost Boys & Co... D ude, when the Aussies load up a plane and go looking for someone they find her!  An Australian plane with 11 trained observers found Abby Sunderland, who on Thursday had activated two emergency distress beacons signaling an international rescue attempt, not long after daybreak Friday. Its crew made contact with her on a marine radio channel.  The mariner from Thousand Oaks, Calif., who had been attempting to become the youngest person to have sailed around the world alone, had lost her mast and rigging after her vessel apparently rolled in heaving seas. Her position is extremely remote, more than 2,000 miles from Australia and Africa.  (Geez, extremely remote is a bit of an understatement!  Think of all the people who get lost between here and Catalina.  Thanks to GrindTV for the copy...  Ed.) A beautiful spring morning with 12 miles visibility and partly cloudy skies.  Winds were calm at go-out and the sea surface was smooth, with a slight bump.  The a

Lost Boys & Co... Emergency rescue effort is launched for teen sailor Abby Sunderland By:  Pete Thomas , GrindTV.com A rescue effort has been launched in hope of finding Abby Sunderland , 16, who set off her emergency beacon locating devices from the southern Indian Ocean early this morning.  Sunderland, who had been attempting to sail around the world alone, endured multiple knockdowns in 60-knot winds Thursday before conditions briefly abated.  However, her parents lost satellite phone contact early this morning and an hour later were notified by the Australian Coast Guard that both of Sunderland's EPIRB satellite devices had been activated.  One is apparently is attached to a survival suit or a life raft and meant to be used when a person is in the water or aboard a life raft.  Abby's father struggled with emotions and said he didn't know if his daughter was in a life raft or aboard the boat, or whether the boat was upside down.  "Everything seemed

H ere are two happy boys hanging out and enjoying a sunny afternoon.  On the left we have Lethal Keithal who is due to take off once again to sunny Russia and help the Ruskies shoot some more hardware into space.  On the left we have Tyrone James who is currently in Tampa, Florida looking for tarballs on the beach.  One thing we've always wondered about Tampa, are the citizens known collectively as Tampons?   Makes sense to us... O vercast this morning with 3 miles visibility.  Looks like it might break up mid to late morning.  Winds were calm at checkout time and the sea surface was smooth, verging on glassy.  The air temperature was 60.6° and the water is a delightful 62.8°.  High tide was at 8:45am +3.3' and low tide will be at 1:11pm +2.1'.  Once again, not much tidal differentiation.  The buoy is reading a south swell out of 187° at 3.3'.  It's so south that we're not getting the full advantage of the swell, so it's only about 3&#

O vercast and drizzlations this morning with one and a half miles visibility.  Winds were offshore or calm and the sea surface was smooth to a light tack.  The air temperature was 60.1° and the water is 62.6° and finally feels like it!  High tide was at 7:54am +3.2' and low tide will be at 12:30pm +2.0', so there's not a huge tidal variation this morning.  The buoy has a S swell out of 187° true at 4.3' and we're calling it 3' to 5' with a little more oomph than yesterday.  Fortunately, the oomph was perfectly rideable.  According to our sources, it could be windy for the next couple of days, with it turning around on Friday for a warmer, offshore weekend.  They also say the waves should be bigger!  Yippee! W e've been asked to tell you that there is a group going to the Buffalo Fire Dept. at around 5:30 on Friday and then over to Keegan's to see Boo

W e took the attached photos last week while the installation crew was working Hermosa.  They're installing them from Zuma to Cabrillo Beach over the next few weeks.  The artwork is hand painted by school kids on the big plastic sheets that are shown around the tower.  Each section is signed by the student so they get a little skin in the game.  There are thick black coloring book lines that denote each color (like dude, stay in the lines!) so they know where and what color to paint.  The crew cuts the plastic to the exact dimensions of the tower's panels and drywall screws them into place.  Voila!  Just like that...
