Funny How Falling Feels Like Flying - For A Little While - Friday Surf & Culture Report

Lost Boys & Co...

Dude, when the Aussies load up a plane and go looking for someone they find her!  An Australian plane with 11 trained observers found Abby Sunderland, who on Thursday had activated two emergency distress beacons signaling an international rescue attempt, not long after daybreak Friday. Its crew made contact with her on a marine radio channel.  The mariner from Thousand Oaks, Calif., who had been attempting to become the youngest person to have sailed around the world alone, had lost her mast and rigging after her vessel apparently rolled in heaving seas. Her position is extremely remote, more than 2,000 miles from Australia and Africa.
(Geez, extremely remote is a bit of an understatement!  Think of all the people who get lost between here and Catalina.  Thanks to GrindTV for the copy...  Ed.)

A beautiful spring morning with 12 miles visibility and partly cloudy skies.  Winds were calm at go-out and the sea surface was smooth, with a slight bump.  The air temp was 60.1° and the water is 64.0°, getting close to the magic summer 65°.  High tide is at 10:12am +3.6' and low tide will follow at 2:33pm +2.2'.  The buoy has a west swell out of 261° true at 4.9'.  We're calling it 4' to 6' and good to fair shape.  Topaz was grinding this morning and there were some hefty outsides coming through.  Sapphire had one big peak, but it was on and steep.  Looks good for tomorrow, with an early morning minus tide, bumping higher throughout the day.  As usual, the wind will be the determining factor.  Our sources say to hit it early!

And what could possibly get in the way of hitting it early?  Well, if you go to the Buffalo Fire Department at 5:30pm, eat dinner and then head over to Keegan's pub and dance to Flashbak until late and maybe you've had a few cocktails - well it just might be a little hard to get up at the crack of dawn...  Be there or be square...  (We mean the BFD, Keegan's and the lineup in the morning!   Ed.)

Mail:

Went out this morning (June 10, 2010) with Luke and one of his SB buddies.  It was kind of big and consistent and I had a tough time getting out initially.  Then on my first two waves, I took off too late on some very steep drops and ATE SHIT to beat the boot.  After that, I paddled out a little further and then had some great waves.

(Wait a minute - lots of guys get their boot beat, but not Tyrone James!   Ed.)

Our heartfelt condolences to Diane Cole and her family on the loss of her mom.  Wow, 93!  What a great journey...
