Fireside Friday Surf & Culture Report

Lost Boys & Co... D epending on where you're looking, it could be 3' or it could be 10'.  But let's look at the numbers:  10 Miles visibility under hazy, partly cloudy skies.  Wind, 2 to 3kts offshore and a smooth sea surface.  50.5º in the air and 58.1º in the water.  Low tide was at 7:23am +2.5' and high tide isn't that high at 12:31pm +3.6'.  So at 7:26am the buoy is reading a west swell out of 274º at 5.2'.  But if you were in Hermosa it was overhead on the south side of the pier and the north side was trying to get "Cablecars" to break (#1).  Some of those outsides looked towable, but the tide kept it from breaking.  Need look at it at low tide... ✠ "When the surf breaks, we'll fix it" The Professor!!

Lost Boys & Co... A rt imitating Life.  A great sunset this evening (#1) through the haze and mist of the swell.  Supposed to get a tad bigger tomorrow.  We tweaked the image a bit... H azy partly cloudy skies this morning.  10 miles visibility.  Winds were offshore by 2 to 5kts and the sea surface was smooth.  The air temp was 50.5º and the water is 58.5º.  Low tide was at 6:03am +2.6' and high tide is at 11:35am +4.2'.  We have a WSW swell out of 250º at 5.6' and it was 4' to 7' depending on when and where you got into the water.  Winds remained calm all day, so it was about as close to an afternoon glass-off as we get in these parts... #2  A bit of Wild Kingdom at the base of the ramp at Sapphire.  This Red Tailed Hawk had taken down a Sea Gull and was having a bit of brekky.  It looked at us as though to say, "Hmmm, you look tasty..." ✠ "When the surf breaks, we'll fix it" The Professor!!

Lost Boys & Co... L ooking north from the still gated Hermosa Pier (#1) we saw this sweet tube at 14th St.  We used to draw them like that... B ig waves again today and plenty of chargers ready to brave the questionable water quality to score some bigger ones.  10 Miles visibility under partly cloudy skies.  Winds were light offshore by 2 to 5kts and the sea surface had a slight warble to it.  The air was a chilly 49.1º and the water is 58.8º.  Low tide was early at 5:03am +2.6' and high tide was at 10:55am +4.8'.  We had a west swell out of 261º at a pumping 10.5' and it was 8' to 12' at the standout locations.  Due to drop a bit mañana, but still plenty of juice... Y ou can only see the very tip of this guys board (#2).  About 50 yards later, when he came out of the tube, he got a round of hoots from the citizens on the beach.  Just wish we had a better angle so you could've see him in the pocket... ✠ "When the surf breaks, we'll fix it" The

A Mahatma Monday Surf & Culture Report

Lost Boys & Co... T he day dawned cloudy and bleak with just a hint of intermittent rain.  Gray, gray and gray.  But in photo #1 you can see the surf class hitting the water trying to avoid Burnsy's Lefts.  Winds were offshore once again at 4 to 6kts and the sea surface looked smooth but had a bit of bump to it.  The air temperature was 57.0º and the water is holding at 59.4º.  High tide was at 9:47am +5.6' and low tide will hit a -0.3' at 5:07pm.  We continue to have a west swell out of 262º at 6.2' and it was 6' to 9' and anxious to try breaking any board you might bring... S o the class left the water and as the last student was hitting the sand our hero Christiano Von Stutzman showed up and after a fast application of wax, ventured out on the north side conveyor belt and paddled through the pier and south until he was almost even with the buoy. He caught this outsider (#2) and rode it almost to the 10 St. tower.  When we grow up we'd like to surf lik

Alpha & Omega Friday Surf & Culture Report

Lost Boys & Co... T he Alpha this morning was LaNoodle Bay (#1 courtesy: Burnsy Worldwide ) where some mackers were pouring through.  This wave was a solid 15 to 18' and this guy was cruising to some deep water on the corner.  The rip going out in the middle of the bay was roughly the size of the Mississippi River at Vicksburg.  In practice it was just as hard to come in as it was to go out, almost...  Note the R-10 Buoy in the top left of the pic... A nother big day in the bull ring.  A sunny morning winds were offshore by 3 to 5kts and the sea surface had a roll to match the size of the swell.  The morning dawned cool at 45.0º and ironically the water was 59.5º and was 60º by mid-afternoon.  High tide was at 8:08am +6.0' and low tide followed at 3:34pm -0.8'.  There was a west swell out of 261º at 9.8' and it was pouring through most spots at 9' to 15'.  Supposed to calm down a bit over the next few days and then ramp up again mid-week.  Tomorrow we'll

THAT'S Outside Thursday Surf & Culture Report

Lost Boys & Co... A late morning shot of Outside Sappha-rua from Veteran's Park (#1).  As you can see the five surfers inside we're pretty much unprepared for what was unfolding in front of them.  From where we stood when that wave peaked up, it looked like you could have decided to take off right and surf Topaz or go left and surf Sapphire...  At high tide you probably could've gone straight and floated over the rocks... C heckout this morning emptied the clouds and soaked the checkers.  A quarter mile visibility and winds were erratic from the SW at 10 to 15kts and intensified during the day.  The air temp was 57.3º and the water actually went up a degree to 59.5º.  High tide was at 7:34am +6.0' and low tide followed at 3:00pm -0.8'.  That low tide coupled with the increase in size might have saved some damage to piers and low lying areas.  The swell is from the west / southwest at 8.5' and it was 8' to 12'. W e checked in the afternoon and it had

Lost Boys & Co... W e've made a couple of resolutions for 2023, but we're not going to share them because we're superstitious about them failing for sure if we reveal them.  Another resolution is to be less superstitious... C loudy with rain intermittent to heavy at times.  Less than a mile visibility and the wind is blowing offshore from 8 to 10kts driving the rain ahead of it.  In photo #1 you can see this charger taking off INTO the wind, rain and Office.  Didn't knock, nothing...  But he was out there even though the air was a damp 59.0º and the water was 58.8º.  The high tide was just cresting about this time (7:00am +6.0') and in #2  he's getting down and jiggy with it.  Low tide is at 2:31pm -0.7'.  At checkout we were catching a west swell out of 260º at 6.2', handing us some 5' to 8' waves.  All the models are telling us that it will continue to build for the next couple of days.  If you're interested in checking it out tomorrow,
