New Year's Eve at Kincaid's

Image
Lost Boys & Co... Y es, here we have, not at the top of the world, but damned close to it, the Professor.  He was sent to Siberia to look for Lethal Keithal.  Turns out they missed each other by hours at the Minsk, Hilton.  LK is back in town and the Professor is due in tomorrow, just in time for the soiree at Kincaid's!  Okay, maybe it's not a soiree, maybe it's a get-together.  Whatever it is, it starts at 4pm and goes until you feel like it.  No host anything.   I t's snowing...  no palm trees...  Our flip flops slip, being too stiff to flop... Lost Boys & Co... R ight o utside of the Yosemite Lodge and up the river a bit is a gentle bend.  The sun had just peeked over the southern rim and was casting a reflection there, that made it look like the star that it really is.  Merry Christmas & Happy New to all of the Lost Boys & Company. A beautiful clear morning, with a chilly offshore blowing.  25 miles visibility, with little or no haze.  Winds are from 3.6 to 5.6kts and the sea surface is smooth.  The air temp is 45.0° (and feels like it!) and the water is 58.5° and feels colder.  Low tide is at 9:38am +2.3' and high tide will follow at 2:23pm +3.0'.  The 46221 buoy is reading a 3.0' swell out of 261° W.  The resulting surf is in the 2' to 3' range and rather gorgeous with some sparkling manes and well manicured lines.  We surfed Hermosa this morning and it was well worth the chill! O kay!  So we're off to Boise in the am tomorrow after we open all of our swag from the fat man.  Here'

Lost Boys & Co... A ll the time, we're in Hermosa and there are people taking pics of the civic Christmas tree.  We wondered, "What's the big deal?  It's a Christmas tree.  Haven't people seen Christmas trees before?"  So, because we're not shy, we asked this couple taking a photo:  "Why are you taking a photo of this particular Christmas tree?" She:  "Well, we come from the east and right now everything there is covered with snow!  And you can see the beach in the background and there are people playing volleyball in the sand." LB:  "So you're doing a bit of gloating on your vacation!" He:  "Dude, it is so nice here!  We'd be freezing at home." LB:  "That was an excellent use of the familiar "dude," where are you from? She:  "We're from Spincich Lake, Michigan." He:  "They had the coldest temp in the country today!" LB:  "How cold was it?" He:  "Min

Lost Boys & Co... B lowing like an S.O.B. out there this morning!  Probably a solid 6 on the Beaufort scale.  Not a gale though...  Here we have a shot of Topaz and Sapphire, which have joined together beyond the jetty to become the mythic Zapot Cloudbreak.  Of the course the shape is for shit, but you get the picture.  A t checkout time the visibility was 25 miles and we had an excellent view across the bay.  Some high wispy clouds, but they were few and far between.  No call for rain over the next 24 hours.  Winds are technically considered a "fresh breeze" at 29.1kts to 31.5kts, but not a "gale", which kicks in when the wind hits 62kts.  The air temperature is 50.2° and the water, at the moment is 59.4° (but with all this wind and typical upwelling, you can expect that temp. to drop pretty quick.)  Low tide at 6:23am +2.8' and high tide is medium at 11:47am +4.1'.  The buoy is reading a WNW swell (283°) at 11.2' and the surf looks like it's

Lost Boys & Co... O kay, We have some questions about this photo we took from the southside of the Hermosa Pier.  Like, who is Richell?  And how is that pronounced?  Is it spelled right (like maybe it should be Rochelle, Rachel or Richard?)  Did she say yes?  Has he asked her yet?  Who is me?  When did all this happen or has he asked yet? (he'd better hurry, the tide was coming up as we snapped this pic.)  Is Richell pregnant?  Will they live happily ever after?... O vercast this morning and 10 miles visibility.  Winds were offshore by 3.6kts and the sea surface was glassy.  The air temperature is 50.7° and the water is 59.4°.  Low tide is at 5:15am +2.8' and high tide will be at 11:04am +4.7'.  The 46221 Buoy is reading a west swell out of 265° true.  It's hitting 4.6' and the waves are either 1' or 5' depending on where you are.  They are also wally-crashy or sucking up the beach.  Maybe later things will improve on the changing tide...? Monkey got himself high into the Christmas tree and then posed for this picture.  At least this beats the time he threw figs at us for a half an hour before we could get him down! A nother beautiful southland day, with winds out of the east by 1.9kts and glassy conditions.  Visibility is 25 miles and you can see the mountains behind the Santa Monicas.  The air temp at checkout was 60.1° and the water was 60.8°.  High tide was at 9:19am +5.9' and low tide is at 4:45pm -0.5'.  The buoy is reading a west swell out of 272° and the waves are in the 3' to 5' range with some bigger sets at odd intervals.  Most places were walled up and crashing, but later it might start working at Rat or some of the rocky places.  The Cove was packed, but had some pretty waves... Lost Boys & Co... Y ou know DirectBG has it right - nothing says Christmas quite like Macy's - the real Macy's in New York.  Now, we're not talking about the religious/spiritual Christmas.  We're talking about the secular, intensely marketed, gift laden Christmas.  It's also the fun Christmas full of expectations, good food, family and friends.  Hey, it might even be a celebration of the solstice or your own private "Festivus."  Whatever, it's a good time to express a little goodwill to some of your fellows who are also flying through space on this interesting/crazy planet... S urf is building as we speak!  The day started out with a brilliantly clear atmosphere and visibility was unlimited.  Winds were offshore by 5.1kts and the sea surface was smooth.  The air temp was a chilly 52.4° and the water was 59.4°.  High tide was at 8:46am +6.1' and low tide will follow at 4:11pm -0.7'.  The surf is hitting the buoy on a west swell at 276° at 3

Lost Boys & Co... T here's just something about Hermosa at night that says Christmas... C hilly, but beautiful this morning.  25 miles visibility with some high wispy clouds.  Winds are offshore by 2.7kts and the sea surface is glassy.  The air temperature at checkout was 50.0° and the water is 59.5°.  High tide is at 8:13am +6.3' and low tide will be significantly low at 3:37pm -0.9'.  We have a 2.3' swell out of 269° west and the waves, when they get through the high tide are about 1' to 3'.  Of all the places we checked Torrance looked the best... Lost Boys & Co... S eaWolf sent us this brilliant response to an obviously stellar Christmas display.  That reminds us - we haven't been by Mrs. Campbell's house yet this season.  The lights dim all through Redondo when she throws the switch every night. A nother beautiful morning here in lotus land.  20 miles visibility with some high clouds and slight haze on the deck.  Winds were offshore at checkout by 2.5kts and the sea surface was smooth with a light tack.  The air was a chilly 53.9° and the water was 59.4°.  High tide was at 7:39am +6.3' and low tide will be dredging out the bottom at 3:02pm -0.9'.  It's not as wild and woolly as yesterday, but we have a more manicured 3.6' swell out of the W at 259°.  We surfed 10th St. in Hermosa and it was 3' to 5' and there were some nice high tide waves holding up in the offshore breeze.  Check it out! Lost Boys & Co... A ll you need is a little moisture and voila!  These fine specimens were growing out the stump of a recently chopped down pepper tree.  We don't know if the pepper tree imparted any of it's heat to these basidiomycete and we're not going to find out!  The last person we heard of who decided to try some local mushrooms was a day late for a liver transplant... S urprisingly big today!  Visibility is 20 miles through a moderate haze and some clouds scudding along to the south.  Winds were offshore by 2.8kts and the sea surface had a bit of residual tack from yesterday's blow.  The air temperature was 55.9° and the water was a tolerable 59.2°.  We thought it might drop a couple of degrees with all that wind, but it stayed stable.  High tide was at 7:04am +6.3' and low tide will be at 2:26pm -0.9'.  The buoy is reading a swell out of the west at 265°.  It's bumping through the high tide at 5.6' and we're calling it 5' to 7'.

C loudy this morning with occasional showers and drizzlations.  5 miles visibility.  Winds are offshore by 5.2kts and the sea surface is smooth to glassy.  The air temp has warmed up considerably to 50.4° and the water is 59.4°, which is still warmer than the air.  High tide is at 5:10am +5.8' and low tide will follow at 12:15pm +0.3'.  We have a 4.6' swell out of 263° W.  The waves are having trouble getting through the current high tide, but it looks like if the tide drops we could get some sneakers at most breaks.  Check it out when you can... Lost Boys & Co... O ur photo today explains a lot.  This is the house in which Boomfwappa and the Professor resided in from 1955 to 1960.  256 North H St., Tulare, California (in those days there were no Zips, area codes or private telephone lines!)  The thing we noticed right off, is that the hitching post that used to be in the front of the house had been removed.  Probably by some antique collector.  When the guys lived there, the house was already over a hundred years old, so it's around a hundred and fifty by now.  It was made out of redwood and had 12' ceilings and a great root cellar.  In the summer they had a swamp cooler for some relief from the Valley heat.  Sully convinced us to get a photo before the place disappears along with the hitching post! W e woke up to clear skies and offshore winds!  Kinda surprising, given the forecast.  Visibility was 20 miles, with a bit of haze.  Winds were light to moderate at 3.9kts and the sea surface was smooth.  The air temp

The bad news is that I had to take him down after 2 days. I had more people come screaming up to my house than ever.Great stories. But two things made me take it down. First, the cops advised me that it would cause traffic accidents as they almost wrecked when they drove by. Second, a 55 year old lady grabbed the 75 pound ladder almost killed herself putting it against my house and didn't realize it was fake until she climbed to the top (she was not happy). By the way, she was one of many people who attempted to do that. My yard couldn't take it either. I have more than a few tire tracks where people literally drove up my yard." Lost Boys & Co... Y es, Virginia, there are mountains out there!  And because of our latest weather, they also happen to be covered with snow.  How cool!  Well, actually, how absolutely frigid... A beautiful cloudless morning with 25 miles visibility.  Winds are offshore by 6.5kts and the sea surface is smooth.  The air temperature at checkout was a chilly 45.5° and the water seemed warm by comparison at 59.0°.  Low tide was at 8:27am +2.4' and high tide will be at 1:54pm +4.3'  Out of the WSW (250°) we have a 6.9' swell raking the west facing beaches.  There were some spectacular waves and some great rides - IF - you happened to be in the right place.  It was in the 5' to 7' range at Topaz and Sapphire was going off as well...  If the wind holds off before the next storm, tomorrow could be a good day as well...  check it out!
