Mushroom Monday Surf & Culture Report

Lost Boys & Co...

All you need is a little moisture and voila!  These fine specimens were growing out the stump of a recently chopped down pepper tree.  We don't know if the pepper tree imparted any of it's heat to these basidiomycete and we're not going to find out!  The last person we heard of who decided to try some local mushrooms was a day late for a liver transplant...

Surprisingly big today!  Visibility is 20 miles through a moderate haze and some clouds scudding along to the south.  Winds were offshore by 2.8kts and the sea surface had a bit of residual tack from yesterday's blow.  The air temperature was 55.9° and the water was a tolerable 59.2°.  We thought it might drop a couple of degrees with all that wind, but it stayed stable.  High tide was at 7:04am +6.3' and low tide will be at 2:26pm -0.9'.  The buoy is reading a swell out of the west at 265°.  It's bumping through the high tide at 5.6' and we're calling it 5' to 7'.  We surfed Sapphire at the tide switch and Andrew Steich was the only one out.  He has really progressed as a surfer.  He was absolutely flying on a couple fat peaks, going both left and right with equal ease.  It started attracting folks fairly quickly and by the time we left there was a sizable pack, but still not plugged...  Check it out in the morning.  We also heard from Mark the Poolman, that Rat was starting to break as the tide was heading down.  If you can beat the wind, take a look...

Our second photo is of the cast of "Antigone" at the Lee Strasberg Theatre.  You'll recognize Savannah Paine, there on the left.  She portrayed Ismene, who happens to be about the only character who doesn't get offed in this Sophocles drama.  It was their young actors performance and we thought it was really good.  It shouldn't come as any surprise that there is great live theater all around us.  The ride out to Hollywood wasn't that bad either, now that they've widened the 405 and the ride back was all jets!
