A Bridge Too Far Tuesday Surf & Culture Report

Lost Boys & Co...

On our way to the far north we decided to try and catch a glimpse of a couple of classic surf breaks along the way.  #1 is the 'Bu and you can see the pier and a bit of a swell...  It's that hazy fall sun that we know and love, knocking the edges off all those sharp corners...

It was sunny this morning with 15 miles visibility and not a cloud in sight (you may refer to photo #4 in case your memory is a bit foggy.)  There was a light offshore wind and the sea surface was glassy (also as demonstrated by #4.)  The air temperature was 56.6 and the water is 67.1.  High tide was at 10:17am +5.6' and low tide was at 4:57pm +0.5'.  We had a SSW swell out of 194º at 3.0' and it was 2' to 3' and looked as though it was trying to make some waves.  Once you caught one, things got exciting very quickly...  Even the bodyboarders were excited...

The long rights of Ventura and "C Street" are featured in #2 and it looked like it was attracting a bit more energy than Malibu.  On a good day it breaks, not unlike Malibu, all the way to the pier.  It is a rare and terrifying experience to get sucked through the pier when the waves are head high.  The pilings are covered with mussels, most of which are broken and ready to feast on hapless surfers.  It's also a L-O-N-G walk back to your car, especially when you're bleeding...

Santa Cruz (#3) was experiencing one of the nicest days we've ever seen there.  The beach was packed with volleyball players and sun bathers and there must've been dozens of kayakers.  Further west at Pleasure Point and Steamer Lane, there were lots of surfers, but small to even smaller waves...  Then again, there's always the Boardwalk...

We have it on good authority that Happy Hour this week will be at Laurel Tavern...
