Wet Hair Wednesday Surf & Culture Report

Lost Boys & Co...

In our travels we have come across some weird superstitions, but this one kinda tripped us out.  In Spain, Portugal and Germany, if you go outside with wet hair you will die.  Since we have spent a generous portion of our lives with wet hair and outside, we were a bit shocked.  We asked if this only applied at night and they said, "No."  We asked how long you have to wait and they said, "Until it's dry!" (Implying that we were morons.)  "What if it rains?"  "Go inside."

The food in Spain and Portugal was amazing.  Especially the seafood.  And apparently we were on a "See-Food" diet.  #1 was in Evora and we were hungry from a long day in the sun.  This was slow cooked "alcatra" style and yes, that's a one person size...

Partly cloudy this morning and 10 miles visibility.  Wind was a bit pesky on-shore 2 to 5kts.  The air temperature was 65.5º and the water dropped a few to 64.0º.  Low tide was at 8:57am +1.0' and high tide was at 4:08pm +4.5'.  There's a west swell out of 272º at 3.0' and it was 3' and there were some nice rights breaking off the outside sand bar...

THE Portuguese dish (#2) codfish (bacahlau).  This was stewed with veggies and crusty bread on the side.  We had a dry white wine followed up by some port...

#3)  LoLa and Steve Jones at the Morgadio da Calcada Estate with a dinner cooked by Manuel Villas-Boas.  This wine producing estate has been in his family for over 600 years! A great stop in the Duoro valley, he's looking for a cook because he wants to devote more time to his wine.  As it turned out we devoted more time to his wine and port and honestly couldn't decide at which he was better...  Okay, it's a tie!

At Marco's house in Raimunda, they have a dining room that sits 24 (#4).  They need this because the Coelho family started with 7 kids, produced numerous cousins and any number of grand kids and great grand kids depending on who happens to be having a baby at the time.  Coelho, by the way, means rabbit...

At the top of Spain in Ferrol, we met with our buddy Santi and once again we had a dinner that lasted three or four hours.  He's got the finest surf shack in all of Spain and here we are in his "greenhouse."  There was pulpo and arroz, more crusty bread and a series of designer cocktails that Santi has engineered over years of testing.  We were especially intrigued by the agua ardent, which made us taller, better looking and smarter.  We're afraid we might not be able to get it here, but we're going to try...
