When One Door Closes Wednesday Surf & Culture Report

Lost Boys & Co...

Manhole covers, signs, architecture...  This time we decided to key in on doors.  Mostly old doors, like #1 that actually says "Porta Antiga" or "Old Door."  There were a lot of interesting knockers as well, but that's another study...

Partly cloudy this morning, with the sun trying valiantly to make an appearance.  Winds were on-shore by 1 to 5kts and the sea surface was smooth.  The air temperature was 64.5º and the water is a disappointing 66º even though it's almost 70 at the buoy.  Low tide was at 9:17am +1.4' and high tide was at 4:15pm +5.0'.  We have a SSW swell out of 205º at 3.9' sending in some 2' to 4' unforgiving slabs.  Too small for Clarke Little and too much for us...

Apparently in Portugal when you have some extra molding, you put it on your door for decoration (#2).  It also takes a minute to figure out what side to open first.  In a very clever use of hardware, the handles in this door also serve as knockers.  Apparently, a lot of Portuguese give the door a bit of a kick to get it to open, this seemed to be the rule rather than the exception...

Some snazzy lions grace this brown multi-paneled model.  Some great old-style key holes with a modern Kwik-Set® lock really securing the whole thing.  A tricky little inset waist on this model made setting the hinges a bit of a chore.

Any idea what it would cost you to do a wall treatment like this (#4)?  It was the real thing with clay bricks and maybe three layers of different colored stucco for a finish.  The grill work here is ostensibly for looking out and hiding the inhabitants while they size up what you're selling.  It rains a fair amount in this area and we were wondering if the rot on the bottom of the door has to do with the high water coursing down the street.
