Peter, Paul & Mary Monday Surf & Culture Report

Lost Boys & Co...

It's a "Peter, Paul & Mary Monday" because they sang "Blowin' in the wind."  If you haven't been outside this morning then you might not have noticed that it's blowin' like an s.o.b. out there.  Let's look at the stats and see just how windy it is...

At checkout this morning we had clearing skies, with a few wispy clouds jetting by and 20+ miles visibility.  Winds were out of the WNW at 19.9kts and the sea surface was as riled up as you can imagine.  That's a "fresh breeze" on the Beaufort Scale and a #5 on the "Force" scale.  In recent years the Force Scale has been extended from 12 to 17 to describe tropical storms that exceed 126mph.  Although it's blowin' hard for us (max today has been 24kts a "strong breeze") there are quite a few places in SoCal that have topped a hundred mph!  The air temperature is 57.2˚ and the water has blow down to 57.4˚.  High tide was at 8:53am +4.9' and low tide will be at 2:53pm +0.2'.  We have a west swell out of 261˚ at 10.5'.  Although it's pretty bumped up we'll call it 8' to 10' and if you jump in the water you're immediately outside because it looks the same 25' out as it does a ¼ of a mile out...

When the conditions deteriorate surfers have a knack of coming up with something that helps ease the boredom.  This evening James Wheatley decided that tarp surfing would be the appropriate panacea.  You can see how it works...  James grabs the edge of the tarp as you come sailing by on your Sector Nine and you just see how far back you can ride...  Actually the one who gets the most tired is James, since he has to hold his arm up high enough to create a wide-open tube...
