Maui Monday Surf & Culture Report

Lost Boys & Co...

Small southern hemi-swell out of 180〫, but the diving is looking deluxe this morning.  We also might take a page from Big Wave Dave's book day-after-tomorrow and do a little stand-up, since the early mornings are so glassy.  Right now we have 25 miles visibility, winds are light out of the NNE at 2.2kts and the sea surface is smooth with a light tack.  The water temperature is 78〫and the air is 75〫going up to 82〫in the pm. The surf is 2' to 3' and is supposed to be building later in the week.

Mail Bag...
I hear that linguica is a terrific bait for catching Tiger Sharks (though outlawed by the EPA)!

(Yes, but let's hope it's just linguica and not linguica breath!   Ed.)

Hello Professor,
As Typhoon #4 (we don't name tyhpoons) passed us, we saw some surfs here in Japan past couple of days.
Here is a surf report for Kugenuma Beach (a popular spot in Shonan, Japan) yesterday (August 12th) morning.
Information source is http://www.umigasuki.com/wave/index.htm (Japanese only).
Kungenuma saw chest to shoulder, occassional head set with strong south west onshore wind.
High tide at 5:43am and 6:29pm, low tide at 12:06 pm.  Face choppy with weak swell, wind held up surfs until early pm hours.
This morning, as there's almost no wind or swell left, surf is down to waist to chest high on set.
I went down to Yuigahama Beach, another spot down in Shonan, the day before yesterday. With my 1 year old son, I did not go in the water but saw some nice surfs for long boarders.
We will be seeing bigger typhoons in weeks to come, it is a typhoon season here in Japan, what all SAMURAI surfers here have been waiting for!

(Sounds like Japan is revving up for some surf!   Ed.)

Frank,
Beth here, Karly's mom, You asked about anyone else sighting a hammerhead, well I did many years ago, but in Orange County, not the South Bay. I was body-surfing off Bolsa Chica State Beach in Huntington near Warner and PCH in the late 1968, 1969 and I literally ran into a dead hammerhead! I did all the wrong things splashing too much, too loudly!  I couldn't get out of that water fast enough.  I remember it was in late summer, really an adrenal rush to say the least..
Karly is in Israel and sends her best to you, she comes home this coming Sunday.
Aloha,
Beth
(Nothing but hammerheads in the O.C., wait, maybe that's jarheads...   Ed.)
