Theme Park Thursday Surf & Culture Report

Lost Boys & Co...

Our two photos embrace the notions of:  How do we get there?  How do we get out?
Big Wave Dave sent us the first pic.  Honestly, BWD, what's the skinny on getting there?  We wanna go too...

It's really trying to look like summer out there!  Overcast this morning but clearing early, visibility 12 miles.  Winds started out onshore by 3.5kts, freshening to 7.9, then 10 to 12kts in the p.m.  The sea surface had a pronounced tack.  The air temp was 60.9° and the water was 62.2°, but there were some warm spots that had to be 67-68°.  Low tide started off the morning at 5:23am -0.4' and high tide will follow at 11:44am +5.6'.  The buoy is reading a W swell out of 260° at 2.6' and we're calling it 1' to 3' and fun.  We caught some nice little peelers in the lee of the rocks this morning and there were actually a couple of outsides with a bit of push.  The tide floated it early, but for a while it was good fun...

Re:  Shark!
This morning my 12-year-old son Chris and his buddy Will were out spearfishing off the rocks at Malaga Cove/Rat Beach when they saw a 5 foot shark. Chris dropped his Hawaiian sling, lost a fin, and they both swam faster than I have ever seen, toward the shore. Some other divers told the kids it was probably a leopard shark and to not be afraid. We got home, checked it out via the internet and they swear it was not a leopard shark, that it was a Tiger Shark
Has anybody seen or heard of a Tiger Shark sighting in these waters?
MaryKay, a concerned mom
(We asked several of the shark fishermen we knew and they all said, "Where!"  When they calmed down they said that it was highly unlikely that it was a Tiger and most likely it was a Leopard.  The textbook leopard and tiger sharks look pretty different, but the species vary in color and presentation and in the water it would be pretty easy to confuse them.  Also, faceplates have this habit of making everything quite a bit larger and hence, scarier.  The bottom line is that there aren't any gates out there so, they can swim wherever they want.  One of the guys told us he had seen a hammerhead once!  If we ever saw a hammerhead in the water here, we'd have to do some serious repression to get back in the water...  Ed.)

Okay, this is the last regularly scheduled report until the 23rd.  We've been invited to the Boomfwappa compound in Maui, for some mischief.  Boomfwappa holds an annual "mischief seminar," in various locations around the world.  Since we have finally paid off the fines and finished our parole from the Portugal seminar, we thought it was time to enroll again.  Dammit, we're easy...
