Waikiki Wednesday Surf & Culture Report

Lost Boys & Co...

Ladies and gentlemen...!  May we present the dueling ukulele duo of Boomfwappa and the Professor!  Fresh back from their whirlwind (or should we say "tradewind") tour of the islands.  On the mainland they will be providing their own wind...

Cloudy, windy and rough this morning.  Visibility was barely 4 miles and the winds were kicked up from the start 7.5 to 10kts.  The sea surface had significant bumps & chops.  The air temperature was 65.3° and the water was cool at 62.6°.  On mornings like this it's a real question about short or long suits!  High tide is at 10:32am +4.8' and low tide will be at 4:14pm +1.4'.  The ever popular 46221 buoy is reading a SSW swell out of 206° true at 3.6'.  It looks like it's trying to happen, but the local surf was in the waist high range and pretty sloppy.  Maybe tomorrow...

This is how you can tell our beaches don't face SW:

A HIGH SURF ADVISORY REMAINS IN EFFECT UNTIL 11 PM PDT THIS EVENING.

BREAKERS OF 6 TO 8 FEET WITH MAX SETS TO 10 FEET CAN BE EXPECTED NEAR POINT BREAKS AND JETTIES. AREAS MOST VULNERABLE TO THE HIGH WAVES ARE BEACHES...POINT BREAKS...AND JETTIES WITH SOUTH AND SOUTHWEST EXPOSURE. THE LARGE WAVES WILL ALSO BE RESPONSIBLE FOR STRONG RIP CURRENTS THAT WILL BE HAZARDOUS TO SWIMMERS. HIGH ASTRONOMICAL TIDES ALONG WITH THE LARGE BREAKERS MAY PRODUCE MINOR TIDAL OVERFLOW DURING THE TIMES OF HIGH TIDE LATE THIS MORNING AND AGAIN LATE THIS EVENING.

(What the hell are "astronomical" tides?  Aren't all tides related to the astronomical forces influencing them?  Are they just trying to get our attention?  Just send waves - that'll get our attention...  Ed.)

Okay, photo #2 is of a Black Tipped Reef Shark.  Photo #3 is of a leopard shark.  Sorry they're not better pics, but we weren't getting any closer to either of them...

"When the surf breaks, we'll fix it..."
