George Freeth Friday Surf & Culture Report

Lost Boys & Co...

This is what we like, brothers playing together nicely.  Oscar and Ché, working on part of the Professor's pain-in-the-ass project.  Speaking of brother's, you can imagine all the times the Professor and Boomfwappa heard "Hey, Pain(e) in the ass!", well this one was well deserved...

Clear skies this morning with 20+ miles of visibility and no clouds to speak of.  Winds were offshore by 3.2kts and the sea surface was smooth to glassy. The air temp was 51.8˚ and that's being generous and the water was 56.3˚.  Low tide at 8:39am +2.0' and not very much movement to high tide at 1:51pm +3.3'.  We have a 3.6' west swell out of 272˚ and depending on your 1020, it can be from 1' to 4'.  Most of the places we checked were walled and the call is to look again later.  The report is for the wind to hold until late pm, so give it a look...

Mail:

Professor,
Would Freeth's location in this pic be near the location that we now call the "Horseshoe Pier?"
Demar
(From the looks of the map, we'd say it would be close to the northern end of the "Horseshoe."  Before they built King Harbor, there were surfing spots all along the beach there and Beryl St. was regarded as a premier bigger wave spot.)

One of the Southerly piers is Ainsworth for which a lifeguard tower at that spot is named.
Big Wave Dave
(Captain John Ainsworth was an early land holder in Redondo and up until the early 70's the street that came down to Harbor Dr. (when the was a Harbor Drive there) was Ainsworth St.  The family owned a parcel of land near the library and we heard that when they re-named the old portion of Harbor Dr. "George Freeth Way" they were considering calling the east-west street "Ainsworth" after the Captain.  Before Torrance Blvd. careened into the Pier, you had to take a jog down to get to the water and the pier.  That very steep street there was Ainsworth st.  We always thought the piers were numbered (until the Monstadt Pier) and that the tower was named after the street, like the rest of the towers.  We shall investigate...
"When the surf breaks, we'll fix it..."
