Holy Matrimony Monday Surf & Culture report

Lost Boys & Co...

When Andrew and Kelli told us they were going to get married on the beach we thought, "What a great idea!"  Then they told us it was going to be in Shell Beach.  "You mean Shell Beach, California?"  They said "Yes!, on the beach."  So we thought, "Okay, we'll bundle up and it'll be a tad breezy, but it'll be fun."  Then they said, "Yeah, it's gonna be on January 12th at 3pm."  Then we thought, "Hmmm, where's my Land's End parka.  We'll need raincoats, waders and an umbrella.  Maybe some waterproof matches..."  So Ché, LoLa and the Professor, along with 250 years of sky diving experience and 500 years of surfing time rolled up and down the coast with Shell Beach in the crosshairs of their GPS's.  It started out freeze ass cold, but as we got closer to Shell Beach a funny thing happened;  it just kept getting warmer.  By one o'clock the wind had died.  By two it must have been 70°.  At three o'clock, the wind was a offshore zephyr, the cove where the nuptials were to take place was 75° and it was the nicest January 12th they had ever had in Shell Beach since the world was covered in ferns and there was an inland sea.  The wedding party, naked at the feet, walked out on the sand and Sean Hanlon, festive in a tux accessorized with an aloha shirt did the honors as Steve Huante played the guitar and set the mood.  It could only be described as magical.  The beautiful bride, the handsome groom, all framed in a picturesque cove, with a shimmering sea and the sun low and brilliant in the sky.  They almost appeared to float in the center of the scene as they kissed and the crowd roared their approval.  Photo #1 is our weak attempt at catching the moment...

Meanwhile, this morning, as PV High was squeaking by Redondo in the last contest of the year, we had a clear morning with 17 miles visibility.  Winds were offshore by 2.9' and the sea surface was smooth to glassy.  The air temperature was 42.6° and the water was 55.6°.  High tide was at 10:27am 5.8' and low tide is at 5:15pm -0.7'.  We barely have a west swell out of 264° at an alleged 3.0'.  That all translated to 1' to almost 2' and barely workable surf...  Maybe mañana...

It was colder in Boise.  Anaconda Burke with a shovel just a little too small for the job.  We're thinking, like, Caterpillar D-7.
