Off The Grid Friday Surf & Culture Report

Lost Boys & Co...

Just got back into town early this morning from an absolutely incredible trip to southern Mexico, so we're a bit thin on the report (which is basically small surf and a gray morning.)  But in terms of culture, here are a few images to whet your appetite for some of the upcoming reports...

#1 is a panoramic view of Puerto Escondido.  Basically everything from the point on the left (which a lot of folks ride when the beach at Zicatela is too big) to the marina at the far right is what you always hear about.  When we got there the main beach WAS too big and we went to the point, which personally I thought was too big.  The second or third time we went down to the point I got drilled so hard I thought I had burst my eardrum and couldn't hear worth a damn for two days...

#2 shows some of the outrageous spiral rips that happen when the surf starts to crank.  They're great for getting out, which is really part of the problem.  You paddle out and don't get your hair wet and then you have to come in.  Calling that wave dangerous at any size is pretty much an understatement...

#3 is Casa Don Congrejo.  About a hundred yards from the beach, when it gets big the thumping wakes you up at night...  The second story palapa is used for hammock testing...
