Aloha Vince Ray Thursday Surf & Culture Report

Lost Boys & Co...

Vince Ray, South Bay icon and legendary surf instructor passed away yesterday.  He was 66 years old and had taught thousands of South Bay groms how to surf (including our own Jah Morgan!)  His Chevron Surf Camp was a mainstay of the summer beach scene and he was always stoked and ready to get his aspiring surfers into the water.  This last year he fretted about the future of the surf camp, not because of his illness (pancreatic cancer) but because the city of Hermosa wanted to move the container that housed all of the boards and equipment he used in his classes.  We first met him officially when he attended Cal State Dominguez Hills.  He was a special education teacher for the Manhattan Beach School District and he was working on his degree.  His performance as "Surfing Santa" for the Easy Reader was always something that seemed to ring in the season. We're sure that the memories of surfing and the stoke he instilled on his students will carry on always!  When we get word of a paddle out we'll let you know.  Aloha Vince!

Strong winds from the north from 10 to 20kts and the sea surface is obviously choppy.  The air temp is 53.7º and the water, despite the winds is still 61.2º.  Low tide was at 10:41am +1.9' and high tide follows at 3:47pm +2.8'.  Looking at a strong west swell out of 265º at 8.2' and it's 6' to 8' and blown around.

"When the surf breaks, we'll fix it"
The Professor!!
