Another Veteran's Day Monday Surf & Culture Report

Lost Boys & Co...

Our photos today are cataloged under the general heading, "Paying to Play."  In the case of Photo #1 we have Jen Doyle and Katie Parkinson smiling over the remains of Jen's board.  As fate would have it, Katie needed a long board for the semi-finals and the always helpful Jen volunteered her ride.  Everything was going great until Katie caught the final wave of the heat and got unceremoniously dumped on the sand.  She was okay, the board... uh, not so good.

A marvelously clear day under cloudless skies and unlimited visibility.  Winds were offshore in the am by 5.6kts and the sea surface was glassy.   The air temperature was 46.1° and the water, after all that wind over the weekend was down to 58.5° at the buoy (where did you put those booties???)  High tide was at 7:09am +6.7' and low tide will drain it out at 2:04pm -0.8' for a week of minus tides.  We have a SSW swell out of 192° at 2.0' and dropping.  We're calling it 1' and it sucks...

Photo #2 is actually "Paying to Play and THEN some..."  Phil paid $125 to ship his sweet little Wheatley down to El Salvador.  When he unpacked he noticed that his fins were a bit... askew.  If you take a good look at this photo you will notice that there is a line from the fin in the foreground all the way down the rail.  This does not happen if you pack things on top of it.  Nope, this happens when you run over it with something really heavy.  Like an airplane.  Okay maybe a forklift - but a really BIG forklift.  If that wasn't enough, the other fin was snapped at the base and the entire thing was mashed up.  The good news:  Jesus (Hay-zoos) loaned him a board to use during his stay.  The bad news:  There were TWO boards in the bag.  The other one was worse.  If you will allow a bit of a rant here...  We pay good money to travel to far-away places and surf.  They charge us an arm and a leg to carry surfboards.  $125 EACH WAY on United Airlines.  They make you sign a bullshit agreement that if anything happens, it's not their fault.  Well, pardon my fuckin ass!  What's the $125 for?  It can't be because of the weight.  They weigh less than the golf clubs that travel for fuckin' free!  Okay, some of them are a bit long and wide, but so is the woman sitting on the window side of me who keeps flopping over on top of me.  Use the $125 for insurance and pay Phil for a couple of new boards!  Thank you...  (And we have NO idea why Phil is smiling...   Ed.)
