A Samhain Tuesday Surf & Culture Report

Lost Boys & Co...

Sneaked up on us this year, but yes indeed, it's "Samhain" or mid-fall.  Kinda feels like mid-fall.  Actually, our favorite is "Lughnasad" which doesn't exactly roll off the tongue very melodically, but is mid-summer.  We could have helped Shakespeare with a "Lughnasad Night's Dream."

So, we're checking out the Galapagos and they're famous for exotic flora and fauna.  They also advertise some diving excursions.  (#1) is a shot of one of their famous dive spots.  Okay, we don't know about you, but we couldn't hold our collective breaths long enough to let all of those hammerheads pass by.  Hey we thought sharks were solitary predators!  Then we found this:
"This family of sharks (hammerheads) has an unusual behavior by forming groups or "schools" of up to 500 members. Few species of sharks do this. Each group has a social structure that determines hierarchical dominance according to size, age, and sex. Sharks usually stay in schools during the day and separate at night. It is not known why they group, but apparently, the practice provides them protection against larger predators."
We like the part about larger predators.  Not sure which larger predators they might be talking about.  Ever since the dinosaurs disappeared, we're not sure the hammerhead has any difficulty with the rest of the food chain!  Look how many there are!  Yikes!

Partly cloudy today, at times looking like it might spit.  Visibility is 15 miles and winds are out of the SW by 2.2kts and the sea surface has a slight ruffle.  The air temperature at checkout was 58.3 and the water is 66.7.  High tide is at 10:35am +6.3' and low tide will be at 5:56pm -0.5'.  We have a 1.6' swell out of the SSW 200º and it's 1' and poor on the beach...  S'posed to get better later in the week...

Speaking of fauna, here is an excellent example of three Homo sapiens females (#2).  Caroline, Kimmy-Suz and Jah Morgan hanging out at the top of the food-chain.  Speaking of, We'll be having happy hour at Laurel Tavern this Friday at 5:30pm to kick the week in the ass and send it into the weekend...

Jah Morgan (#3) on the flip-side...
