More Memories Monday Surf & Culture Report

Lost Boys & Co...

"My first custom shaped board was a Becker..."  That statement has been uttered hundreds of thousands of times!  This weekend Phil Becker (#1 is how we always remember him) finally succumbed to the cancer that he had been plagued with for several years.  THE iconic south bay shaper, he shaped hundreds of thousands of boards and by all accounts was the most prolific shaper of all time.  He inspired numerous others including our own José Barahona and anyone who picked up a planer on Cypress St.  We remember him at the Cove asking us if the board he had shaped worked well on our trip to Hawaii.  We were blown away that he remembered us at all, given the number of dedicated clients he had.  Photo #2 with John Lenninger and José, after putting flowers on Phil's plaque on the pier.  Rest in peace and keep riding Phil...

Clear skies this morning and at least 15 miles visibility.  Winds were offshore at 5 to 7kts and the sea surface was brushed smooth.  The air was a chilly 48.3º and the water could use warming up at 56.5º.  High tide was at 10:16am +5.3' and low tide was at 4:37pm -0.2'.  The buoy said it was a SW swell out of 221º at 2.6'.  We looked at it and thought, "Okay, the tide's high, but it looks like it's breaking through the full tide."  So we went out and proceeded to get some 3' to 5' peaks that had us laughing out loud.  It wasn't even breaking that close to shore!  Tomorrow?  Only one way to tell!

The Barahona Team (most of them #3) with Brendan Simmons, Dane Acosta, El Ché, Mr. Christian, Jah Morgan and Dave Shaffer after ripping some high tide snappers at the pier...

Sunset tonight (#4) waiting for the green flash and getting an Endless Summer moment instead...
