Cheap Trick Thursday Surf & Culture Report

Lost Boys & Co...

A touch of gray this morning and we wend our way about the So. Bay.  The weather is supposed to be closing in over the next couple of days, so if you need a little outdoor time, better grab it soon!  1.5 miles visibility under a distant sun.  Winds were offshore at checkout, by 3.1kts, but turned early (9am.)  The sea surface was smooth.  The air temp was 53.3° and the water is still 59.7°.  Low tide starts off the morning at 5:22am +1.1' and high tide is also an am at 11:09am +3.6'.  The buoy is reading a W swell out of 265° at 3.9'.  We're calling it a solid 3' with bigger outsides.

We hung with Don Swift and Leonard Treadwell this morning.  We were basically set to check out Hermosa when they walked down.  They were probably 11 or 12 when they started surfing Topaz and the Professor was a big high schooler.  Funny how that goes.  Anyway, they basically talked us into going out at Topaz and before the wind kicked up, we got some nice ones a stones throw from the rocks.  On the other end of the timeline, we chatted with Shirely McIlroy when we got out of the water.  Her husband Chick was on the 1960 Olympic waterpolo team that went to Rome.  Sound familiar?  It should, that's the same team that Freddy and Jim Kelsey were on.  Quite a few of those guys went on to be the core of the LA County Lifeguards for years.

Remember Keegan's tomorrow (Friday) night the 19th.  Strong drink, loud music and two hotdogs for the price of... er... two hotdogs.  Of course there is a persistent, but amusing group that starts out at the Buffalo Fire Dept. and has real food and even stronger drinks.  They hit it at 5:45pm and leave in time for the first note.  Park and walk.

"When the surf breaks, we'll fix it..."
