Watertight Wednesday Surf & Culture Report

Lost Boys & Co...

Just a couple more manhole covers for your consideration.  Carol, did a bit of research:
"The Redondo Beach manhole cover is a good example of art in the ordinary and it 's made in the USA! I looked up East Jordan Iron Works ( from Michigan) and saw in their Cutstom Logo Covers' photo gallery, one from Houston. Strange- it looks like a characature of a pelican and some sort of mutant. The motto on the cover says "Clean Water-Clear Choice."  Thanks for the diversion from my lunchtime homework efforts :)"
(Take a look at the East Jordan Iron Works site.  The cool thing is that they not only have manhole covers, but all kinds of swag as well.  Everything from hats and jackets, to pens and small cast reproductions of manhole covers!  Sounds like a good place to go on a field trip...  Ed.)

Cloudy this morning with about 12 miles visibility.  We got a few drops on the windshield as we cruised along the shore, but nothing daunting.  Winds are already onshore by 7.8kts and the sea surface is set about with a short messy chop.  The air temperature is 55.6° and the water is still 59.2°.  High tide is at 5:06am +5.5' and low tide will be at 12:38pm -0.7'.  The swell is from the west at 262° and hitting about 3'.  The resulting waves are in the 3' range, but pretty riled up from the wind and approaching front.  Some rain this afternoon and then clearing until Friday night-Saturday, when they tell us we should get some additional rain.  The surf depends on the winds these storms will generate.  They don't look like big events, but even a bit of onshores can muck things up a bit.

Food for thought:  Looking at the manhole covers, we decided we kinda like it when they paint the street and paint part of the cover.  Then they come back and check whatever is in the hole and when they put the cover back, they never get it quite right.  There's some kind of randomness there that makes you realize the world's not a very organized place.  Or maybe it's just our part of the world.  Maybe in Sweden, they always make the cover and the paint match when they put them back?  This is the kind of thinking that has kept us from going to the head of the class...

Remember:  The report will be occasional and random for the next week.  We'll be traveling in Mexico, with Puerto Escondido as our destination.  We're told that our phones won't work, but there's a good chance that our Blackberry will.  If that's the case we'll try to send a few syllables while we're out and let you know what it looks like...  Pay attention!

"When the surf breaks, we'll fix it..."
