A Hard Rain's Gonna Fall Tuesday Surf & Culture Report

Lost Boys & Co...

This morning the drain at the Hermosa Pier finally blew open (#1)!  Good news, bad news...  The rain and storm conditions might very well dig some holes in the sand bars and create some new ones and the runoff will help the rip into the office, but the pollution in the system that's been building up for months is now in the water and it'll be a judgement call about when it will be safe to get back in the water.  Rainy conditions and at times limited visibility.  Winds whipping out of the SW at 10 to 20kts and the sea surface is white-capped and choppy.  The air temperature was 53.7º and the water is 59.5º.  High tide was at 6:05am +5.5' and low tide will be at 1:02pm +0.5'.  Crazy waves out of the SW 220º at 9.2' and breaking to almost 10'.  Here's one (#2) rolling through the office...

Went down the rabbit hole of old surf photos on the internet the other day and found these two.

#3.  Bing Copeland (Bing Surfboards), Bev Morgan (one of the founders of Dive 'N Surf), Greg Noll, Dick Medvie and Bob Hogan (famed L.A. Co. lifeguard).  Four out of the five have plaques on the Hermosa Pier!

#4.  The caption says who's who, but we remain amazed that Ricky Grigg beat Tommy Zahn in that race.  For quite a stretch Zahn basically owned that paddle...  Lots of great watermen have taken up that challenge...
