Another Foaming Merciless Sea Thursday Surf & Culture Report

Lost Boys & Co...

Here (#1) we have three hearty souls (who are obviously from somewhere else) tackling this morning's surf.  As you can see it was cloudy with about 10miles visibility.  Winds were persistently onshore by 10 to 14kts and the sea surface was chopped up a bit.  The air temp was 55.5º and the water is 60.4º and the wind should knock that down a bit.  Low tide at 6:54am +3.0' and the high tide will be at 12:41pm +5.0'.  We have a west swell out of 264º at 3' and it was about that with these three guys bobbing around in the soup.  The good news is that this could set-up a nice wind swell event for the morning!  Stay tuned and give it a check in the am.  The kids will be out at 8 sharp because I'm gonna blow the whistle...

Talk about a whistle!  (#2) Is the iconic Marilyn statue that has been a landmark in Palm Springs for some time.  We headed out to the desert at the behest of Steve And Christine Jones, friends from high school and they spared no energy in showing us around and giving us the behind the scenes tours of all the local attractions.

One of the things you're not going to do on most tours is visit the date groves.  You'll find tons of packaged dates and gift boxes, but it's tons of fun to go out into the groves themselves and find out about the rather complicated process it takes to grow the best dates.  Date palms live for about 75 years and initially they use ladders to pick the dates.  But the trees grow so fast and tall that soon they have to use mechanical cherry pickers to work the trees and harvest the fruit.  But for whatever reason they leave the ladders (#3) attached and they end up 40 to 50 feet above the ground.  Kinda funny to be walking around and seeing these ladders hanging from the trees.

The man, the myth, the legend, C. Steven Jones (#4) our host and guide through the desert.  Here he's shown on the polo grounds, not far from where he and Christine live.  The polo season is just getting ready to start and we must head out and catch a few chukkas sometime.  They love to have guests and are waiting for you to contact them...
