Monmouth Monday Surf & Culture Report

Lost Boys & Co...

Well, even though it's a Monmouth Monday, we're back in good ole southern Califrisco.  But here's a couple of shots from just south of Monmouth at Long Branch.  You can see that it was bigger there than it was here when we left.  We kept waiting for the Coach to say, "Hey, Professor!  We're in New Jersey!"  They actually have some pretty good waves here during the summer at the right tides and when the hurricanes are spinning far below in the Atlantic.  You might also notice that the set-up is rather Topaz-like in quality and rockiness.  In fact it goes Topaz-like all the way down the beach.  Here we demonstrate four Topazes in a row, all happening with predictable precision.  We've always wondered why the Army Corps of Engineers stopped with Topaz St. and one jetty.  We could've saved a lot of sand, created some good waves and spread the crowd out a bit if there were four or five jetties!  Damn good idea...

Overcast this morning with clearing about noonish.  5 miles visibility and a fair amount of marine haze.  Winds kicked off the morning already from the west by 3.7kts and will probably get around 5 to 10kts by the afternoon.  The air temperature was 63.3° and the water at the buoy was 64.8°.  High tide was at 10:58am +4.2' and low tide will be at 3:56pm +2.0'.  We have a swell out of 263° W at 2.6' and it's really trying to fight the tide and break.  We're calling it 2' and it's a good day for any aspiring surfistas to hit the knee-slappers.  Go gett'em...

Sweetness and Blood: How Surfing Spread from Hawaii and California to the Rest of the World, with Some Unexpected Results  by Michael Scott Moore
The author is from Redondo Beach.  Nice section about stopping by Mike Purpus' apartment to interview him.

Tiger and I are here in your former hometown - Pismo Beach.  The air is 55 and the water is 55,  the sand is 55, and the inside of the tent is 55.  Unfortunately the shower temp is 55 also.
Remember in 1973 it only cost $1.50 a day to touch the sand in New Jersey.  Or if you had a military haircut you could use the beach all summer for $10.00.  It wasn't worth it.  Hope you guys are good.  I'm going after some really cold water the next two weeks in Eureka and Oregon.  I'll say hello to Greg Noll for you in Arcata.
