Fertile Friday Surf & Culture Report

Lost Boys & Co...

So we joined the surfing Knights (Bishop Montgomery H.S.) at Hermosa for a practice session this morning.  It was wally-crashy, but they persisted and we have to admit we were very impressed!

At 6am we had 10 miles visibility under clear cool skies.  Winds are offshore by 1.9kts and the sea surface is glassy.  The air temp is 58.6f and the water is 59.7f, but if you had told us it was 62, we would have believed that.  The tide was low at 9:19am +2.8' and high tide will follow at 2:11pm +3.6'.  In an odd coincidence the swell is reading 3.6' as well and the waves are 3' to 6' depending if you're in Redondo, Hermosa or El Porto.  Hermosa was breaking hard and walled and the Avenues were smaller but equally shapeless.  Everyone tells us it's supposed to be better tomorrow, but we imagine it might be more of the same.

Remember that the Chiaramonte's will be in town this weekend and we have just had a confirmed sighting of Corey surfing Doheny!  We understand he will be joining us tonight at El Torito - good new for everyone who hasn't seen the Malucca in a while.  Hottie and the kids will be there as well, so come down and join us!  The fun starts at 6:30 or whenever YOU get there...

The attached photo shows a couple of BMHS team riders on a walled Hermosa closeout.  Considering the conditions they got some pretty good waves.  There are about 5 really good surfers and a couple of them are girls.  Unless you've had your head in the sand for the last 20 years, you've noticed the increase in women surfing.  Now that more women are surfing the quality of their riding has improved as well.  Yesterday at the Cove Jenny Teer surfed better than most of the guys in the water (including the Professor we might add!)  We're glad for the trend.  In almost all of the cases they end up being easier to look at than Danger Boy, the Coach and Lethal Keithal - wait...  he is pretty darned cute, isn't he...  okay so they're better looking than Danger Boy, the Coach and the Professor.  That works!
