Lost Boys & Co...

There's an absolutely fabulous museum near the entrance to Palenque.  It houses some of the artifacts that wouldn't fair so well in the elements.  Many of these treasures are made of ceramic like this stele (#1) that features an exquisitely rendered portrait of a nobleman.  Erik Von Daniken suggested that these renderings were inspired by extraterrestrials who had a hand in building Palenque and that the elaborate headdresses are really space helmets...  Might be kind of a chore to get them into the saucer...

Cool and clear this morning with 15 miles visibility. Winds started up early out of the NW by 2kts and freshened to 18kts by the afternoon.  The sea surface was smooth to light chop.  The air temp was 55.6 and the water is up a couple of degrees to 60.3.  Low tide was at 11:17am +0.1' and high tide will follow at 6:19pm +3.9'.  We have a building 4.9' swell out of the west 271º and it was 4' to 5' and should get a bit bigger over night.  Unfortunately, the wind is supposed to increase as well and that might dash the surf for the morning call.  The good news is that it's supposed to simmer down tomorrow and Saturday should have some good waves and offshore winds...

The one thing that we did notice was the treatment of the eyes.  In #2 the large blank stare suggests goggles, which might lend a little leverage to the spaceman story.  That was a good theory until your realize that these pieces were all painted, so the parts that seem to be goggles probably would have featured polychrome eyes.  #3 still has some of the blue paint that pre-dated most eye shadow by a couple of thousand years...

#4 looks like an older toothless nobleman.  Also sporting those goggle-like eyes and an interesting skullcap that features an odd top-knot, he's still got a bit of paint left as well.  Suggesting that these people were assisted by aliens or that they were aliens, unnecessarily dumbs-down our ancestors.  Seems pretty clear that the Mayans possessed all the knowledge that it took to make their pyramids and work their astrological calculations...  Cool to imagine alien involvement, but not very likely...
