Take The Metro Monday Surf & Culture Report

Lost Boys & Co...

It is with great sadness that we report the passing of Taras Poznik, surfer, boat captain and local legend.  They are currently suggesting that he was the victim of "shallow water blackout," which is caused by hyperventilating before diving.  He had a spectacularly troubled youth culminating with the 2000 conviction for spearing "Big Mama."   "Big Mama" was a  50-year-old halibut that had been on display in a tank at the Redondo Beach SEALab. Attorney Laurie Belger, who represented Poznik, told the Washington Post, "I've tried over 20 murder cases in my career, and nobody cared. But you steal this fish, and eat it? I tell you, it was as if he had barbecued Bambi. People want to put him in the gas chamber."  He turned his life around after that episode and although he looked tough on the outside, by all accounts he had a heart of gold.  Jimmy Barahona is collecting money to help the family with funeral arrangements, so if you're so inclined...

For his 44th birthday, Jetski was well feted, with a sumptuous feast at Chef Melba's and a new board bag with none other than his namesake, Boris Badenov on the nose...  Worth waiting 44 years, we'd say...

Then, our latest addition to the ranks, Ario Hooshmand, took his first couple of lessons with the Professor, Jetski and Max.  Collectively under Chancellor Mactaggart, they've created the University of Hermosa Surf School.  Unaccredited, it's outstanding in it's field...  Lesson #1  The proper way to throw the shaka...
