Cut Your Toe Tuesday Surf & Culture Report

Lost Boys & Co...

Honestly, surgery in Mexico isn't always this primitive...  When Morgan Sliff went out at the point in Cardon, Mexico to make good on day 279, she had no idea that she'd take a punishing wipeout, break her leash and then cut her toe on the reef on the way back in.  Would she have gone out anyway?  OF COURSE!  And besides, how primitive can it be if they're using a smart phone for a light?  Speaking of smart phones or cell service in general, you can call from Mexico or El Salvador and call anywhere in the U.S. with crystal clarity.  But if you live in the Hollywood Riviera the reception sucks!  And god forbid you should try to call P.V....

After all that wind yesterday, things calmed down quite a bit.  We had 10 miles visibility with a few high clouds and the wind switched around to the east by 6.3kts.  The sea surface was smooth with only a slight roll from yesterday.  The air was a chilly 49.9 and the water dropped a couple of degrees to 57.7.  Low tide was at 6:49am +0.2' and high tide was at 1:26pm +3.2'.  Things were down to a 4.9' west swell out of 265º and it was just about 4' with some bigger outsides...  Could be some residual good ones mañana...

Because of the high concentration of travertine in the water in the Palenque area the creeks and rivers build up these deposits that look soft, but are quit literally stone.  As we traveled through the area we ran across some spectacular falls and lagoons that looked like they'd been poured out of concrete...

As you hike through the jungle, you are bound to notice what looks like the remnants of stone walls.  Many of these are actually temples and pyramids that haven't been excavated yet.  At one point we thought we were looking at a cave, but it was actually a hallway, complete with corbelled arch, into a pyramid that was totally overgrown by the jungle.  It's almost impossible to imagine that they could ever unearth all of the buried structures and antiquities...

Word just in that Happy Hour this week will be on the patio at Samba!  5:30pm Friday and Mark has the gin on ice as we speak...
