Sand Fireworks Monday Surf & Culture Report

Lost Boys & Co...

Gotta take a few minutes to go on about the South Bay Surf League Kickoff Classic.  Like for instance there were 150 men's shortboard contestants and when the dust cleared number one was Kyle Beatty from Redondo!  The last Redondo surfer to do that was his brother Connor in 2011.  Oh yeah, and he's a freshman!  You can't have a first place unless you have a second and all of those steps along the way.  In this case, one step from the top in Men's Longboard, Kris Hall came in second.  There were 50 contenders and South High Coach Leigh McArthur said that Kris surfed the best longboard heat (in the semi's) he'd ever seen since he's been coaching surfing.  Also in the finals was Tate Curran, who came in a close fourth overall.  In the women's shortboard Emma Waldinger beat some strong competition (including a couple of sponsored ladies) to finish second.  Her first place in the third round sent her directly to the finals.  By her own account she had her wetsuit on for 8½ hours during the contest!  Getting matching fifths overall in both longboard and shortboard Hali Honea, spent almost 2 hours of heat time in the water.  Finally, Trevor LaShure nabbed third overall in the Bodyboard competition.  Trev looked like an Indian rubber-man ping ponging in the less than excellent conditions of the BB final.  At one point he flew through an el-rollo into a 360 and jetted all the way to the beach.  He also just missed the finals in both long and short board...  Quite a crew!

Cloudless skies and 15+ miles visibility.  Winds were offshore at checkout at 2.3kts and the sea surface was smooth.  The air temperature was 60.0˚ and the water was a toasty 70.0˚.  High tide was at 11:20am +5.8' and low tide was at 6:44pm +0.1'.  We had a west swell out of 281˚ at 4.6' and it was 3' to 5' with some macking outsides.  We saw Pat Ramirez at Hermosa Pier do a 20'+ standing broad jump when he couldn't make the drop and had to leap.  You could hear people up and down the beach go, "Ooooooh!"

Finally, we had never heard the term "Sand Fireworks."  Trevor LaShure was describing a low tide dredger that spit sand out the back 10' in the air when it collapsed.  We thought it was an apt description and had to give credit where credit was due, before we use the hell out of it...
