Almost A Tulum Tuesday Surf & Culture Report

Lost Boys & Co...

So, you're in Africa and your buddy Luke "Rock" Maggio says he's getting married, whaddya do?  You hop on a plane and go to Mexico to make sure things proceed according to plan.  Now it seems like there must be something in the air.  Jah and Christian got married in Saladitas and now Luke and Nathaly got married in Akumal, Mexico, deep in the heart of Quintana Roo!  The best part was that the Maggio's let the Professor be an honorary Maggio for the day.  Still reeling from the honor! (#1, R to L  The Professor, T.J., Rick, Luke)

Sea surface was still rocking a bit from yesterday's wind.  10 miles visibility and calm until the wind turned about 9am.  The air was a wintery 47.8º and the water is likewise 58.6º.  High tide was at 5:19am +4.0' and low tide will be at 12:14pm +0.4'.  We have a 4.9' swell out of the west 276º and it was 4' to 6' and a bit bumped...

One of the distinct features of the Yucatan peninsula is the presence of "cenotés".  We snorked a couple, Cenoté Eden, (#2) and Cristalino Cenoté.  Water was a bit cooler than the ocean (ocean=82º, cenoté=72º) but it was pleasant enough to stay in for as long as you liked.  Eden was deep enough that scuba divers plumbed the depths and wedged into some of the caves.  Really clear and enough aquatic life to make it interesting.  In fact initially we were trying to I.D. some of the fish and realized they were fresh water and not your typical salty types.  There were also turtles and toe-pedicuring fishies...  Not for the squeamish...

#3)  Just happened to be "Seaweed Season" on the peninsula.  Not the kelp-like stuff we're used to, but a smaller, ticklish variety that gathers in windrows along the beach.  The local hotels hire beach rakes to gather it and haul it away, but it's persistent and only slightly annoying in the water.  Amazingly, the outer reefs looked almost surfable, but there were only SUPs to be rented and we gave it a pass...

Okay, we admit we've been leaving Jetski on his own lately, but having him find a new buddy, that was a bit much.  #4) The Professor is still pouting...

More Africa mañana...
