Totem Pole Tuesday Surf & Culture Report

Lost Boys & Co...

Well, since this is a Totem Pole Tuesday, we thought we'd start out with a totemic section that we scoped somewhere near Sitka.  This is a depiction of an orca and we really liked the fin.  One of those things you could see incorporating into a future board design.  We were impressed with how exacting the designs are.  All of the line work is spot on, with no sloppy edges.  A lot like Tikis in general, but specifically different in execution considering the harder woods and different tools.

Overcast this morning with 10 miles visibility.  Winds kicked up first thing out of the SSW by 5.6kts and the sea surface has a bit of a light chop going on.  The air temperature was 60.7° at 7am and the water was 64.9°.  High tide was at 11:20am +4.0' and low tide will be at 3:53pm +2..0'.  The buoy is reading a swell out of the SW at 200° at 3.3'.  We're calling it 2' to 4' and we surfed the Hermosa Pier this morning.  Started out with 3 guys and got pretty packed over the next couple of hours.  We gave Bobby Warchola a second look because he was still wearing his hood, but if you surf that good you can wear a hat whenever you want...

Our second shot this morning is of the Professor getting into his survival gear during the lifeboat drill.  Remember this was only a drill.  Since we had never done this before we took it pretty seriously.  We got ready in our staterooms and walked to our boats.  But on the way there were all these folks who just didn't get it!  They were dragging their life vests behind them like boogey boards, while balancing their latest offering from the buffet.  Then in classic fashion they talked all during the safety lecture.  As soon as it was over they had 50 questions!  One rather large citizen from Texas asked the Professor what would happen if they missed the boat.  The Professor said, "They will kick your fat ass into the water and you will have to swim for it."  So Texas thought about it and then said, "What if you're late."  The Professor said, "I will swim over to you and climb up and wait to be rescued."

"When the surf breaks, we'll fix it..."
