Be True To Your Tuesday Surf & Culture Report

Lost Boys & Co...

Moonset over Cefalu' (#1).  Made this great reflection off the point...

Mostly sunny this morning with 10 miles visibility.  Winds were light offshore and the sea surface was glassy.  Actually felt a little oily, maybe some seepage there.  Some folks think this is a sign of pending fault activity, that's okay, as long as it's not our fault.  Air was 56.7º and the water is 61.5º.Low tide was early at 5:20am +3.1' and high tide was at 11:44am +5.8'.  We have a SSW swell out of 193º at 3.6' and it was a fun 3' to 4' and got better as the tide rose...

If you have time mañana, head down to Hermosa where the second part of the South Bay Scholastic Men's shortboard competition will be taking place.  Action starts at 6:45am for the remaining heats.  Some great performances last week and there should be some standouts tomorrow as well.

We snorkeled at Taormina (#2/#3).  Built on a hillside you take a gondola down to the beach where there are a number of beach concessions that have food, lounge chairs and kids who run cocktails to the bathers.   We snorked around the point in #2 and the water was clear to about 40'.  68º to 70º it was refreshing and there were small fish and some interesting plant life and rock outcroppings.  Winston Churchill thought Taormina was the most beautiful spot on the planet and it's not hard to see why.  It's far enough east where they really don't get any waves and on a clear day a little further north in Messina, you can see mainland Italy.

A bit reminiscent of Hawaii, you have a view of the ocean with Mt. Etna in the background (#4).  An active volcano, it smokes and sputters and is a constant reminder of the origin of these islands.  Even though it was in the eighties in Taormina, there was snow on the northern slopes of the volcano, where the summit tops out a bit higher than 11,000'...
