What's Up With The Temps Monday Surf & Culture Report

Lost Boys & Co...

Is it really colder or is it just us?  According to NOAA, 2023 was the warmest year since they've been keeping records (since 1880.)  The ocean temps rose 2.12º above the 20th Century average of 57.0º.  That doesn't seem like a hell of a whole lot until you realize how big the oceans are and how much additional heat it must take to make them rise by that much.  But somehow that rise in temperature doesn't have seemed to impact the South Bay in ways we've noticed.  In fact, in discussions with our peers on the pier, they've suggested that this was the coldest winter/spring we've had in a while.   Oddly enough the water temp this morning (Sunday) is 57.0º, the former world average.  Two years ago, 2022, on this date it was 61.0º.  Last year 2023, it was 57.2º.  Temps in April bounced around the high 50's in both years, suggesting that our memories tend to warm things up a bit.  And actually that 61.0º was pretty much an anomaly as the temps dropped back to the 50's after that date.  So suit up in that full rubber suit and don't worry, it'll get warmer, eventually...

Kinda bumped this morning after all that wind and rain yesterday.  We'll wait until the bacteria levels calm down a bit.  Partly cloudy skies (#1) and 20 miles visibility.  Winds were offshore at 3 to 5kts.  The air temperature was a chilly 46.9º and the water is 56.7º.  One tide, low, at 11:05am +0.1'.  It's a west swell out of 267º at 4.6' and it was shoulder to head high, but a bit walled and a struggle for the longboarders.  Maybe a little smoother mañana...

If you'd like to catch some great prep surfing, Redondo will be squaring off against arch-rival Mira Costa on Wednesday morning starting at 6:30am at Hermosa Pier.  This rivalry goes all the way back to the start of the league and Redondo has a chance to beat Costa this year!
