Tuesday Shmoos-day Surf & Culture Report

Lost Boys & Co...

Memories of the 60's flitted through our brains as we joined the "March For Our Lives" at the Manhattan Pier.  An amazingly large group of protesters, probably several thousand, that at one point stretched from pier to shining pier (#1), marched in solidarity against gun violence.  We were especially proud of the young people we encountered who enthusiastically supported this cause.  We've often said that the young people we've coached and had the pleasure of knowing are some of the brightest and most capable human beings we've ever met.  If they're for it, so are we...

Clear this morning, looking like a balmy spring day, except for the fact that it was 47.3º and the water is 56.3.  Winds were light offshore before turning on at 9:30, making for a rather narrow window.  While it lasted the sea surface was smooth, then turned into a calliope of whitecaps.  High tide was at 6:46am +5.4' and low tide will be at 1:44pm -0.8'.  We have a WNW swell out of 290º at 3.3' and it was 3' to a little bigger before the wind knocked it all down...  Next couple of days still have a hint of swell and then we take a dive for a while...  Get it while you can...

One of the special events that Jah Morgan sponsored, was the "Life Aquatic:  Ocean Dwellers and Storytellers."  There were some touching, funny, scary, unbelievable, crazy stories.  The raconteurs were glib and confident and were accompanied alternately by Suzi and the Joey on the ukulele and guitara, much to the delight of the assembled crowd.  Here (#3) we have the Professor on the hot seat recounting the trip Danger Boy and he took to Hawaii in 2008.  It should have been titled, "There Will Be Blood..."

Shown here (#4) we have a Strongylocentrotus Purpuratus, more commonly known as a purple sea urchin.  This extremely close-up shot was taken by Jetski as we toured the exposed reef at low tide.  He was amazed to find these spiny denizens in almost every hole and crack.  If you managed to land flat, chances are you wouldn't have a problem.  But stick your toe or foot in a hole...  OUCHY!
