Minoan Monday Surf & Culture Report

Lost Boys & Co...

In answer to your second question, "YES! There is surf in Greece and the Grecian Isles!"  But let's start in Athens and get some history out of the way...  Here we have LoLa with the Parthenon in the background (#1), high above Athens on the Acropolis.  Pretty much everywhere you go in the city of Athens the Acropolis looms over the vista...

The pier was looming over the surf vista this morning as Bacallao, Christian, Doc Scale, Jah Morgan and the Professor got some nuggets.  It was partly cloudy and about 6 miles visibility.  The wind was off by 6.5kts and the sea surface was smooth.  The air was a fall-ish 61.5 and the water is 68.7 at the buoy.  High tide was rising for the session and was high at 9:22am +6.1' and low tide will be at 3:31pm +0.2'.  We have a SW swell out of 229º at 3.3' and it was all that and a bag of chips at 3' to 5'...

Don't Need A Weatherman Dept.:  The Temple of the Winds (#2) is a leftover from when the Romans made their way into Greece.  We need one of these at the beach, it's an octagonal column and on each face it describes what you can expect from the winds coming from that direction.  Smart, huh!  When it was built they also included weather vanes on each face so you could tell without guessing from which way the wind was blowing!

(#3)  2400 Years later and they're just starting renovations on the Parthenon, it's about time...  Looks like there's lots of possibilities though...

Our personal architectural fave has always been the Erechtheion (#4).  It's an ancient Greek temple which also sits on the Acropolis and dates from 406AD.  It housed the ancient wooden cult statue of Athena.  Considering how much abuse it's taken over all these years, including being bombarded by the Venetians, the Caryatids (the six women who hold up the roof) are still pretty recognizable.  They have been replaced by copies, but we saw the originals in the Archaeological Museum and they are beyond impressive...  Eight feet tall, necks like tree trunks, marble busts... Our kind of girls!
