Themistocles Tuesday Surf & Culture Report

Lost Boys & Co...

History of Western Art 101.  Slide #1  On the left we have an example of a Cycladic art sculpture from circa 3300 BC.  The girl on the right, is much younger than that.  The Cycladic culture was the first of the three main Aegean cultures to flourish in Greece and the surrounding islands.  Along with the Minoans and Mycenaeans it ushered in what we commonly know as Western art.  If you want something earlier we suggest cave painting...

Cloudy this morning with around 10 miles visibility.  Winds were offshore to 5 kts and actually stopped for a minute mid-morning.  Fall temps prevailing with the air at 60 and the water holding tough at 68.2.  High tide was at 9:53am +6.1' and low tide is at 4:14pm +0.0'.  We have an increasing SSW swell out of 210º at 3.3' and it was 3' to 5'.

We were really impressed with how many of the early motifs were sea based.  Here we have what is termed a Kylix Krater (#2), these were shallow drinking vessels that also could be used for mixing water and wine (although we have no idea why?)  This one features a fish, a squid, a cuttlefish and a sting ray like thing.  It also includes some random shells and an eel.  As you were drinking these animals appeared to come to the surface.  Maybe you kinda hurried up to see what was on the bottom.

If you want clear water the Aegean is a great place to start!  In most places we had 40 to 50' visibility!  It was incredible!  In #3 LoLa is on a rock ledge in Hydra, which is pronounced EE-drah, so that you can annoy your friends (and enemies) with the correct pronunciation.  We could see the bottom here and when we snorked we realized it was like at least 50' before the even deeper drop-off...  One of the great things about Hydra is that they have no cars!  Although, they make up for the pollution because everyone smokes!

It's All Greek To Me Dept.:  If you can read Greek let us know what this sign (#4) says...  It looks like:  "Do NOT throw your anchor into these wires!" or "Danger No Electric Anchors"

"When the surf breaks, we'll fix it"
