World Serious Tuesday Surf & Culture Report

Lost Boys & Co...

We're ready for the world series or as Uncle Charlie would say, "The World Serious."  And to top it off, literally, we have our Waterman's Dodger hat (#1)...

Another good session this morning as the clouds rolled in and obscured the early morning sun.  Winds were offshore by 2kts and the sea surface was smooth and wet to the touch.  The air temperature was 59.6 and the water is 65.3, quite nice in good rubber.  High tide was at 8:58am +5.7' and low tide will be at 3:19pm +0.5'.  We have a SW swell out of 219º at 3.3' and it was 3' to 4'.  Doc Scale got the dump this morning (the dump is the last bit of hot water in the bucket) for his stellar right on his last wave.  Kids are in the water mañana so the call is 8am.  High tide will be at 9:25am so that's not a bad idea...

From the western end of the Galata Bridge (#2) in Istanbul.  The original plans for the bridge included a sketch that Leonardo DaVinci submitted.  The Sultan thought Leonardo's plan was a bit too Venetian.  From this angle you can only see half of the bridge and then there's the other side!  We'd say that makes for about 300 + - anglers.  Your chances of catching a fish here are like winning the lottery.  Honestly, not sure we'd want to eat the fishies in this water...

These are a couple of Turkish mermaids (#3).  Despite our weak efforts to find out about these specific images, we couldn't come up with anything interesting.  On the face of things they look fairly sinister.  We also prefer our mermaids to have a bit more than just human heads...  You know, like real mermaids...

Okay, as relics go these were an unexpected surprise.  In these various containers (#4), often stretched like filaments, were Mohamed's beard hair.  You'd have expected these to be in some mosque, under guard and not available to the odd tourist, but here they were...  Part of the reason they aren't revered in the same way many relics are is that Muslims feel that would be idolatry.  Still a lot of folks passing through regarded the exhibit with special reverence...

This (#5) is one of our favorite pics of the trip.  Here we have a Islamic woman in full burqa texting on her cell phone.  There was something about the juxtaposition of the traditional dress and the cell phone.  A lot of the Turks didn't like the women in full burqa, complaining that they were refugees from Syria and the Mideast and didn't reflect the Turkish views on religion which are typically less strict.  Turkish women, if religious, usually wear a hijab that covers the head and shoulders.  They can be colorful and more like scarves...

Happy hour this week will be at Laurel Tavern to take advantage of the big screen for the series.  5:30 or whenever the game starts...
