A Slightly Grumpy Thursday Surf & Culture Report

Lost Boys & Co...

If this sign (#4) were in the United States, it might say "INCREASE VELOCITY - SURFERS IN THE ROADWAY".  They want you to have fun and come back...

Here in the fire ravaged Southland everyone is trying to figure out how to get to Malibu while the road is closed and surf without 100 people in the water.  Someone told Bobby Warchola that they would boat him to Malibu for $100 for fuel.  He was looking for someone that would split it with him...  Meanwhile it was hazy sun and 15 miles visibility and the offshores were wafting through at 3.9kts and the sea surface was smooth.  The air was 52 and the water was 66.0.  Low tide was at 10:00am +3.2' and high tide comes in at 2:47pm +3.9 for not much of a tide change.  We have a SW swell out of 236º at 2.3'.  The surf is 1' and poor...

(#1) Water 85º, Air 80º, Margarita 35º...  Enjoying the evening happy hour ritual...

Buck (#2) opening the cooler to get another Pilsener™.  If you look closely you can see the temperature readout on the top right of the fridge.  It says 1.9ºc...  You can advertise cold beer if these numbers line up correctly...

Here we see the Professor (#3) straightening out to get a little speed before he lays it over and heads down the line...  Further along he jumped off in the shorebreak and got to do the ever-popular La Paz rock dance.  Big round slippery pumpkin sized rocks all the way to the beach.  And the beach, that was more rocks...  TJ asked us if it was very crowded.  Both times we surfed La Paz we were basically the only people surfing the corner.  There was a group of Brazilian girls that were there for a photo session one morning, but they were on the inside and when you'd come flying by, they'd hoot and cheer you on...  Sunzal at the point is always busy.  We surfed it two or three times and there were between 20 and 40 people, but a lot of them were trying to figure things out.  We always got waves.  Most of the time we surfed Bocanita, which is the right at La Bocana, just a short walk from our digs.  Everyone surfs the left, so if you're on the right they don't even look at you.  It's actually kinda weird.  You surf there all morning and you come in and some guy who was there the whole time asks where you surfed that morning.  The three of us were like 50 yards away from them...

Happy hour this Friday at Samba at 5:30pm on the patio.  Wear your headlight...

"When the surf breaks, we'll fix it"
The Professor!!
