How Nine Ten Tuesday Surf & Culture Report

Lost Boys & Co...

18 years ago 9/10/01 was maybe the last "normal" day folks of our generation had.  You could buy a ticket and just walk up to the airplane and go just about anywhere you wanted...  "Hey, do I really have to take off my slaps and sunglasses?"

Gray this morning (#1) with low clouds and a 7.5kt wind blowing straight out of the south, leaving the surface a bit textured.  The air temperature was 66.5 and the water is 71.2, but without sun things felt a bit chilled.  High tide was at 8:51am +4.4' and low tide is at 2:01pm +2.2'.  There's a SSW swell out of 197º at 3.6' and it was a solid 3' to 5'.  A bit wally with some tight little corners (as shown)...

#2  Here we have Queen Lili (Lili'uokalani) seated with her retinue and a copy of the original version of "Aloha 'Oe."  If you haven't visited the Bishop Museum in a while, take some time next time you're in Honolulu.  It's a treasure trove of Hawaiiana and Polynesian culture.  They also have a building in back which is devoted to the Hawaiian Sports Hall Of Fame.  You can't believe all of the international sports celebrities that are Hawaiian...

LoLa posing (#3) with some Polynesian slit drums.  They have that archetypal Tiki look, which of course helps in conjuring up the proper spirits...

#4 Features some of the early Polynesian outriggers that brought the Polynesians to Hawaii as well as some of the craft they used in their daily lives.  Fabulously crafted models...

We have it on good authority that it will be Patrick Malloy's for Happy Hour this week.  Be there or don't be Irish for a minute...
