Everybody's Got A Mask Monday Surf & Culture Report

Lost Boys & Co...

"No Mask No Service"  (#1) Is this a restaurant?  Is this a nail Salon?  Is this a bar?  Nope, this is a surfboard factory!  But are they stupid?  NO THEY'RE NOT!  They just want to stay healthy and keep making surfboards for all the good children of the world.  So, if you want one of these fine examples of the shapers art, then you'd better mask up and be responsible!

The surf was crappy today...  We could tell you that it was overcast and it was... and we could tell you that visibility was down to like 5 miles (and it might have been four)...  You might guess that it was windy and that the wind was onshore at 6 to 8 knots and the sea surface was chopped up and you'd be right!  Now you're figuring that the temps were like 60 in the air and 63.5 in the water.  That's because you've been around the block before and on this block the tide is low at 9:08am +1.3 and high at 4:06pm +5.3'.  There was a SSW swell out of 205º at 2.6' and the surf was a crappy 2' and this isn't news to you because you've seen July's like this before and you know that this shit happens from time to time.  Donnie says that there might be a window in the morning when things might be working.  We'll be rolling down the windows and checking it out...

Now that you have a mask, you can go into the surfboard factory.  But you know you.  You have problems with social distancing.  To this end our favorite shaper and mentor José Barahona came up with a variation on the 10' pole.  This (#2) is the 6' stick.  He tapes one end of it to you and the other end to himself.  This insures that you don't get any closer than the regulation 6'.  In this photo he demonstrates the efficacy of this device using non-other than José Bacalao!  Now José just happened to be there because he was getting a new longboard shaped.  You heard right!  José is getting a custom single fin longboard - the kind you don't use a paddle with - to compliment his quiver.  We won't divulge his color choices, but they are very classy and quite tasteful...

#3  Look at that rail line!  Is there anything sweeter?  No, not unless it includes fudge sauce and chocolate cake...

This week we thought we should give credit to some of our photographers.  Here we have Scarlett Lee Fast, who shoots a lot of our Idaho material.  She is 4 years old and wants to be a detective when she grows up.  She thinks photography will help her in her chosen profession.  We told her there are folks who will deny anything, even if there are pictures...
