Cavalcade Of Champions Monday Surf & Culture Report

Lost Boys & Co...

Let's start out with our own Tom Welch (#1) who got 4th Place in the Hermosa Triathlon this last Sunday at the Hermosa Pier.  While the rest of us were trying to find parking, Tom was biking, swimming and running and doing it better than all but three of his fellow competitors.  Congrats to Tom and we imagine next year will find him on top of the podium...

Hazy sun and barely 6 miles visibility this morning.  Winds wee light onshore, 1 to 2kts and the sea surface was smooth.  The air temperature was 65.7º and the water has jumped to a fine 70.2º.  Low tide was at 7:11am +2.5' and high tide will be at 3:11pm +4.7'.  It's a SSW swell out of 207º at 2.3' and it was 1' to 2' and perfect for today's start of the Galactic Small Wave Championships.

The Galactic Small Wave Championships (GSWC) take place whenever we say they will.  You will recall two years ago when they were held in the Chacahua Laguna Estuary and Captain Donnie Souther came away with the gold in the overall category.  In second and third were Tarsan and the Professor both winning longest wave and smallest tube categories.  This year Jetski, Doc, Ronnie and the Professor started out on their 30 minute heat.  Very quickly Doc caught two slappers and secured first place.  Hot on his heels was Jetski who rolled his first wave and then caught a legitimate right hander.  Not to be out done, Ronnie swung into a right then a left to get into second place.  It was Doc 8, Ronnie 7, Jetski 3 and the Professor .5.  Then Ronnie fired up his afterburners and stroked into a left that got him a legitimate 7.  He now had 11 and was the man to beat.  Doc wasn't to be denied and he took off late into a right barrel that got him 6 points for a total of 10.  But Ronnie was on a roll and grabbed another left for 7 and a total of 14!  The Professor languished as the clock ticked away and Jetski who needed a solid 8, got a 7.1.  Getting serious Doc swung into a walled canyon and got a 6 point drop and second place.  Ronnie won first with 14 points, Doc was second with 12, Jetski third with 10.1.  Second round mañana.  Still accepting beach signups...
