Mr. Clutch Tuesday Surf & Culture Report

We got so close to actually checking the surf this morning when our clutch cable decided it had had enough and unwound like a cheap kite string.  We managed to limp it to King Harbor Auto Repair only to find that they're on vacation this week.  Yeah, well, looks like we're back in the VW Bus repair business.  Note: we ordered 2 cables.  One for next time...

Windy this morning and Doc says we're not missing anything.  10miles visibility under hazy skies.  Winds are onshore 3 to 5kts and appear to be ramping up during the day.  The air was 61.9º and the water could be warmer at 63.0º.  High tide is at 10:00am +3.5' and low tide will be at 1:50pm +2.7'.  It's a SSW swell out of 194º at 3.3', but it's being beaten down by the wind and we'll call it 2' to 3' outside.

Who does this? (#1)  Doc said one word:  Humans.

Lost Boys & Co... W e talked about how much building is going on in China.  There are so many new bridges across the Yangtze that they haven't named them all yet!  There are between 50 and a hundred going up between Yichang and Chongqing alone.  In our first photo, the bridge and road are so new that the road crosses the bridge and then doesn't go anywhere!  We watched them welding the superstructure in #2 and to our amazement we watched a guy put on a belt with eyes on the hips and get hoisted up a couple of hundred feet to near the top of this tower.  No nets, no additional straps, no hat - just flying there with a portable welding rig, sparks flying.  We actually saw guys spot welding stuff without dark glasses!  There are some tough guys up there!  Dude, you like gotta have a hat... A beautiful morning, with a few big clouds bumping along and 20 miles visibility.  Winds started onshore from the crack and they were light at checkout...

Sometimes On Friday/Saturday Surf & Culture Report

Lost Boys & Co... G reat group at Siblings Burrito Palace this morning! (#1)  Caroline joined us all the way from Atwater to catch a few gray ones. C loudy and 12 miles visibility.  Winds were light out of the south by 2 to 3kts and the sea surface was smooth.  The air temp was 58.0 º and the water was 61.5 º .  Low tide was at 8:26am -0.6' and high tide follows at 4:00pm +3.4'.  SSW swell out of 202 º at 2.6' and it was 3' and some sharp little gray grinders... S mall surf doesn't have to mean lousy surf.  Here (#2) we have Sheamus Swift showing what you can do when you put your mind to it.  Sheamus got first place in the longboard division against Mira Costa on Thursday! ✠ "When the surf breaks, we'll fix it" The Professor!!

Familia Conquers Iceland Thursday Surf & Culture Report

Yes!  Jah Morgan and Baron Von Stutzcanhang have surfed the Icelandic bombora.  The word is that they found the water temp to be better than Crescent City in the winter!  We are not surprised.  The North Atlantic Subtropical Gyre flows right past Iceland.  And what is a component of that gyre?  Bingo!  THE GULF STREAM!  So although by the time it gets to Iceland it's not exactly warm, it's better than it would be if the Gulf Stream weren't part of it.  Unfortunately, California has no similar warm water gyre… Hazy sun this morning with 10 miles visibility.  Winds are variable 1 to 3kts and the sea surface is smooth.  The air is 66 degrees and the water is 69.8!  Low tide was at 6:11am +0.6' and high tide follows at 12:42pm +4.4'.  It's a SSW swell out of 205 degrees at 2.0' and that's just about the size of it.  Some wally ankle slippers for your skimming enjoyment… Back mañana for an empirical l...
