Mail Order Monday Surf & Culture Report

Lost Boys & Co...

Attached we have a long shot of "long shot" Brett Balcer at the Hermosa Pier riding high and tight.  The second shot is him (second from left) getting ready for the announcement of the results of the Pacifica League Body Boarding contest.  Brett was the only BMHS surfer to make it to the finals.  Earlier we had Lucas Mattick and Charlie Grove competing in the short board semi-finals.  Competition was stiff and they failed to advance.  Lucas had also done remarkably well in the long board quarter finals until he interferred on his fifth wave.  That call caused him to lose his third wave score and kept him out of the semis.  It was a long day, but the Bishop Team did really well for a small school.  The team still have a chance to make it to the State Championships!  We'll tell you how in a minute.

Coudy this morning with 12 miles visibility.  Winds are offshore by 3.9kts and the sea surface is smooth.  The air temperature is 60.0° and the water is 57.4º.  Low tide pushes out at 11:51am +0.6' and high tide will be at 6:47pm +2.9'.  On a west swell out of 262º, the buoy is reading 4.3' and the surf is showing at most of the points and above the Breakwall from 3' to 4'.  We surfed Rat and had a good time.  A bit crowded, but we're guessing that a lot of kids will be in school tomorrow.  Like, you don't get out for Inauguration Day, do you?

We mentioned the Bishop Surf Team had a chance at making the State Championships.  It turns out that the host school gets to have 4 teams represent their area.  The top two spots are pretty well set in stone - Mira Costa and Palos Verdes.  But the 3rd and 4th spots are still up for grabs.  It looks like this year's Hennessey's Cup Competition will determine who goes to the State Championships.  The Hennessey's Cup Competitionwill be held on Saturday, January 31st at the Hermosa Beach Pier.  So if you have a passing interest, get on down there.  The State Championships will be April 4th and 5th and you'll have a chance to see some of the best prep surfers in the world. No joke!  Don't worry, we'll remind you...
