Mrs. Grundy Monday Surf & Culture Report

Lost Boys & Co...

One of the lowest tides of the year yesterday afternoon, -1.9' at 3:47pm.  So naturally we headed down to see how much trouble we could get into.  The first thing we did was grab our velocipedes and ride along the hard sand.  That was fun although you can see our tires looked like crumb donuts when we got through.  Yeah, we cleaned'em up afterwards...

This morning we have a brilliant sky and 25 miles visibility with some slight smoggy haze.  Winds are offshore by 5.7kts and the sea surface is glassy.  The air temperature is 58.3℉ and the water is 57.0℉.  High tide hits the top today at 9:23am +6.9' and low tide will be at 4:27pm -1.6'.  (Another great day to get down and check out the low tide - clamdiggers are acceptable, but you have to remember what they are!)  The buoy is reading a 1.6' swell out of 278°.  The swell is hitting that morning high tide, so don't look for any action until midday.  Then it's all about the wind!

Some reader comments on Todd Tisue and Mavericks:

Yikes, those are two of the scariest photos I've ever seen. I gotta know what happened to the boat in the foreground!  Todd Tisue is the spawn of Fred? Where is Maverick's?  -Keek

(Ed.  Mavericks is up on a corner of Half Moon Bay and breaks way in the hell out on an outcropping of rocks.  It's hard to see from the beach it's so far out.  Yes, Todd is Right Wing Fred's son and evidently has the same genetic makeup when it comes to liking big waves.  As far as the boat goes, nothing happened to it!  The lenses they use to shoot these surfing photos are so long they foreshorten everything to a ridiculous degree.  The boat and the jet ski next to it were safely ensconced in the channel out of harm's way.)

3 guys taking off on that wave at the same time, and 2 guys looking like they are bailing and ditching their boards.  I don't know about you, but I don't think I'd want to ride a wave that size with ANYBODY else on it.  I'd need room to move without worrying about some other guy.  -TJ

(Ed.  We happen to know that TJ would have no problem taking off on that wave if Buffalo Kealauna was in front of him.  Buffalo would have some explaining to do...)

Our second photo is of the Shark bike parked next to the Professor's favorite rock at Rat Beach.  That's the island that's just peeking out when you're trying to paddle out against the rocks.  You can see that it's about 3' high and pretty sturdy.  Looking around we were pretty surprised to see how many rocks there were and where they were.  That's why it's fun to see things without water on them.  Things look a tad different...

When the surf breaks, we'll fix it..."
