Undergroung Testing Tuesday Surf & Culture Report

Lost Boys & Co...

Hey, it's looking a lot like a summer's day!  Attached we have a shot of Hermosa, north of the pier, looking toward the far and idyllic Manhattan.  Amazing how the Indians sold that piece of real estate for $26.  Of course, that's before Big Wave Dave lived there...

Started out a bit overcast this morning, but things have cleared up in brilliant fashion.  15 miles visibility and only a light marine haze..  Winds are out of the SSE by 9.2kts and the sea surface is smooth.  The air temperature was 63.5° and the water at the buoy is 61.2°, but we're calling it a solid 66 in the surfline.  High tide is at 11:10am +3.8' and low tide will be at 3:33pm +2.4'.  Coming out of 204°, we have a 3.0' swell that is generating waves of about the same height.  High tide has quieted things down, but if the winds remain soft, there's a good chance that it will pick up again in the afternoon.

While waiting for a few waves at the Hermosa Pier this morning the Professor struck up a conversation with Jason who was paddling a stand-up surfboard.  Jason asked if the Professor would be interested in giving it a go and he said "Yes!"  So, trying to act like he knew what he was doing, the Professor, swapped boards and got up on this 10' fatty.  And he did it!  That is for about 5 minutes and then fell, a victim to trying to turn the damned thing.  Now you think he'd just get back up and stand on that horse again.  For whatever reason, he fell about four or five times before he finally got the initial knack back.  What did he think?  "I think that it would be great on a really calm day, when you're trying to cover some distance and stay relatively dry.  We DO have a lot of days like that.  I'm not too sure about surfing the thing.  Maybe too much shrapnel for me, with the paddle and all.  But fun, especially if someone had one to borrow!

Notes to the Editor:

On the photo of the Professor's wounded knee:
"knee pads, wrists guards...sometimes helmet are helpful...it is a pretty color and it tells you that you are still alive."  Lawrence Moch

(Ed.:  Yeah, we just kneeded some white and blue!)

It appeared as though DB was doing his best Stevie Wonder impression . . . perhaps in practice for the Tribute to MJ tomorrow.
Although you didn't mention it, I presume that Boomfwappa will be up on stage with the likes of Jesse, the Reverend Al and The Professor . . .  Big Daddy
(a 4th of July casualty due to spousal migraine; sorry that you missed da bomb macaroni salad!!!)
(Ed.:  Yes, Danger Boy does an extraordinary Stevie Wonder!  No word on either DB or Boomfwappa participating in the Michael Jackson tribute.  Boomfwappa long ago learned to not tell us ahead of time when he's playing a gig like this.  Can you imagine the guest list?  Now for sure we're not on it...  Damn!  We love macaroni salad.  Goes great with linguica!)

As always, great party on the fourth, Thanks, deadfish
(Ed.:  Hey!  What's with the "deadfish."  We haven't heard that in a long while.  Hoping to see Easky in the water again soon!)

Our second shot is of the south side of the Lighthouse Jazz Club.  A Hermosa institution, we thought the backside actually looked a little jazzier than the front!

"When the surf breaks, we'll fix it..."
 The Professor!!
