Mover & Shaker Monday Surf & Culture Report

Lost Boys & Co...

A great surfing weekend!  Let's start out with this fine shot of Birdie getting ready to turn off the bottom and get barreled.  Sting Ginther made the supreme sacrifice and instead of getting his own waves, took photos of the rest of the crew.  Birdie braved the Topaz side and this wave is some indication of just how powerful it was there.  Sting camped out on the Sapphire side for awhile and got the next shot of Jose getting ready to get tubed on a long winding left.  Jose had that left in the palm of his hand and this is just one of a number of good waves that came through.  Surf Coach Vince Toyama joined us for some action close to the jetty and shot number three is him getting ready to slingshot out of the bottom of this wave.  Finally, we have this shot of the Professor getting ready to pull into a tube that's probably just a size too small to fit him and his board.  It turns out that it hit him on the head, spit him out and told him to go faster or watch from the beach.  So he started going faster!

A gorgeous morning here in the Southland.  We have 20 miles visibility under mostly clear skies and winds out of the east by 5.7kts.  The sea surface is smooth.  The air was a chilly 46.4° at checkout time and the water is holding at 58.5°, although we might have guessed it was a tad colder.  High tide was at 4:24am +5.3' and low tide will be at 12:20pm -0.1'.  The tides are setting up for a week of wide oscillations, with minus afternoon tides all week.  The full moon caps the cycle on Friday, so you can run crazy up and down the tideline and not worry about being swept out to sea.  Down markedly from yesterday, the buoy is reading a 3.9' swell out of the WSW at 253°.  We're calling it 3' to 4' with some thicker larger outsides.  Fun waves though and we surfed Topaz this morning with only a couple of other folks out.  We'll have to wait and see what the weather does tomorrow, since they're calling for rain.  The word is rain, but not much wind, so that might be okay!
