Moilish Monday Surf & Culture Report

Lost Boys & Co...

Things were a tad moiled this morning as we checked the surf, hoping for a bit of calm in the midst of the latest front to pass through.  However, atmospherically, things were incredibly clear and we had 25miles plus visibility as we gazed across the bay, under partly cloudy skies.  Winds were seriously on-shore by 8.3kts kicking to 12 to 15kts.  The sea surface was chopped just a bit short of white caps.  The air was 63.1° and the water is 64.8°.  High tide is at 10:20am +6.0' and low tide will be at 5:39pm +0.0'.  The buoy is reading a west swell out of 273° at 5.2'.  The resulting waves are a bit disorganized by an honest 3' to 5' even with the high tide.  The word on the beach is that it should straighten out a bit throughout the day and tomorrow should be the call.  Like always, it's worth a look...

Our second shot features Arlecchino, carrying on about Colombina's charms, in an effort to woo her in the manner of his master Lelio.  As usual, the girl isn't falling for his bluster and he can take his cheap suit elsewhere.  All of this took place in Eagle High School's production of Carlo Goldoni's "Liar."  David di'Donato, capably played Arlecchino, while Allison Burke, gave us the definitive Colombina.  It was over-the-top great for a high school play.

Just in...  A strong earthquake hit late Monday off the western coast of Indonesia's Sumatra island, but no damage or casualties were immediately reported.  The 7.5-magnitude temblor struck at a depth of 9 miles on a small island off Sumatra, the U.S. Geological Survey said. A massive earthquake and tsunami struck off the same island in 2004.  It was reportedly felt in five towns in Bengkulu and West Sumatra provinces, but so far there no reports of damages or casualties, said Tatok Yatimantoro of Indonesia's Meteorology and Geophysics Agency.  The tremor that struck at 9:42 p.m. (1642 GMT) was centered about 48 miles southwest of the Pagai Selatan in Mentawai Island, with a depth of 6 miles, according to the Indonesian agency.

Our last photo provided by the Santa Barbara County Sheriff's Department shows the bite of a shark on a boogie-board on which Lucas Ransom, 19, was killed Friday, Oct. 22, 2010, in a shark attack at Vandenberg Air Force Base near Lompoc, Calif.… Read more »

(Our sympathies to his family and fellow surfers.  We had some discussion recently about sharks and this just punctuates their presence in our waters.  In a year that has brought us unusually cold water, krill, blue whales and other various anomalies, this is yet another concern that should pique our awareness.  Granted, this is a rare occurrence, given the number of sessions surfed every day throughout the state, but it's always a good idea to be vigilant...   Ed.)
